When one of my daughters came home from school yesterday asking for some money to pitch in for the "upcoming celebration" this Friday at school I asked her, "just what celebration is it?" She said she had no clue, as the school didn't elaborate. After doing some research on the old Internet I discovered that the 16th of September is a "Mexican" holiday celebrating their independence from Spain.

16 de Septiembre:
El Grito de Independencia<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

Well on one of the side bars they had a link to the battle of the Alamo, which is not celebrated here in the RGV like cinco de mayo and el grito de independencia, and low and behold that's when I discovered that Texas is a racist state according to wikipedia. So two things have come from this...my daughter will not be going to school on Friday and I discovered that wikipedia is a typical lefty nut job site. Check out the site below and discover what racists you really are!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Alamo

-- snip from wikipedia --

What is not covered in most topics covering the Battle of the Alamo is the fact that early settlers were also slavers and thus defended slavery over the opposition to slavery by the Mexicans. In fact, Texas would enter the Union as a slave state. Tejanos that defended slavery were Juan Sequin and Jose Antonio Navarro. Early Anglo settlers left other parts of the United States to escape the growing opposition to slavery. Thus, many view the establishment of Texas as a racist act. Jim Bowie's father was one of the largest slavers in New Orleans and Bowie himself owned slaves. As a result of this many question the idea that such individuals can be held up as heroes. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the Anglo settlers real aim in coming to Texas was to set up a slave state.

Mexicans were against slavery, the Texans at the time were not against it. Apparently the rest of the south was for Slavery. That is the truth.
Yes they did found texas under the motives being that they wanted to own slaves and open protestant churches and establish another state. Mexicans had them under other strict laws as well.

I dont have respect for those that think slavery was right.

Keep in mind that Wikipedia is a community contribution kinda resource... That means that anyone - you, me - can write a subject contribution and insert it... Obviously the person who wrote that entry was a Marxist activist bent on revisionist history and the destruction of the American culture... There are those out there who hate America and want nothing more than to tear down our institutions and remake it in the Marxist model...

So I wouldnt take much that Wiki says too seriously... Its not being written by any objective historians... Its one of the "really neat" brave new world web experiments...

It's just so obvious that the person who "inserted" that paragraph is a Texas/America/Anglo hater. The paragraph is totally out of place and doesn't have anything to offer about the "Battle of the Alamo." This is probably a La Raza project.

Everyone else is offended these days about all sorts of stuff, why cant we be a offended? Maybe we should start a FC campaign to have that entry removed... We can flood them with emails and monitor the sight to see if the entry comes down...

If you don't like a Wikipedia entry, delete it yourself and write a new one. Wikipedia is user-constructed, so if you want to delete all the liberal entries and rewrite them with conservative definitions, you have that privilege. Your IP address will be tracked, so that they can control things like people who go into the entry on Jesus to write profanity all over the definition.

And you can bet on it that they will erase your "profane", conservative history and rewrite it to their liking.

By "they", you refer to other Wikipedia users. Again, if you don't like what they write, erase it and write over it. If conservatives patrol and maintain their definitions more often than liberals, the conservative definitions will stay. If liberals modify more consistently, the liberal definitions will stay. A rewritten definition doesn't have any more resistance to deletion than the entry it replaced.

For example, the content at the Wikipedia entry has just changed to reflect this discussion (see the last sentence of the second paragraph of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Alamo#Prelude_to_battle).

The link just refers back to this thread on this forum... Is THAT the change you're referring to?

How bout adding a comment that says, "However, the opinions expressed above concerning slavery in America and the establishment of the State of Texas reflect a recent revisionist school of thought that has neither relevance to the subject at hand nor any basis in fact."...

No. The ISP trackers who look for profanity will see a conservative's history as profane, and "control" it, by deleting what is written.

Few idiots always end up ruining it for the rest of us. Even Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, says he wants to get the message out to college students that they shouldn’t use it for class projects or serious research.

He gets emails from students who say, "Please help me. I got an F on my paper because I cited Wikipedia!"

Students, don't use Wikipedia!!!

Yes. The link provides an example of how a Wikipedia user can modify an entry to reflect an alternate point of view, and provide documentation as evidence.

How bout adding a comment that says, "However, the opinions expressed above concerning slavery in America and the establishment of the State of Texas reflect a recent revisionist school of thought that has neither relevance to the subject at hand nor any basis in fact."...

If that is what you think, then you should put that change in the entry yourself.

Wikipedia doesn't have an entry for "ISP tracker"; perhaps you mean the "recent changes patrol", whose guidelines appear at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:RC_patrol. They find and undo vandalism. Altering a page to reflect a neglected political orientation doesn't qualify as vandalism; for vandalism guidelines, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vandalism.

For example, if you wanted to add text to the Edward Kennedy entry that said, "Senator Kennedy's drinking problems have caused many voters to suspect his incompetence," it would be a valid entry despite its partisan overtones. If you wrote, "DIE DRUNK PIG KENNEDY HA HA HA," that would be vandalism.

If you wrote, "DIE DRUNK PIG KENNEDY HA HA HA," that would be vandalism.

Now if you were to replace Kennedy with any Conservative it would be viewed as a valid entry by lib professors; therefore it could be used by kollage students.

What do you think of that Peach...

Those are just smartass punks who think it makes them look cool if they run down some region of the country that they think is un-cool... It was settled by Spanish citizens leaving Louisiana after the invasion of Spain by Napoleon. Napoleon took control of Spain. Those people in New Orleans wanted to remain Spanish so they went to Mexico. Opportunity for economic gain was in northern Mexico. The Mexican government was taken over in a military coup under Santa Anna. (Spelled wrong?)

Many revolutions sprang up against the dictorship which stripped there republican rights from the citizens of Mexico. Every one was crushed but Texas stopped them and set up an independent government. Slavery was a part of Texas history, but that was not the reason for the war or establishment of the Republic of Texas. They became American only out of neccessity. Texas could not defend against another war with Santa Anna. The US was reluctant to accept Texas into our borders because of the obvious war coming with Mexico as a result. Good enough??

I spent 6 months in Texas back in 1988 while I was in the Army. I hated it only because of the heat but the people I met were very pleasant and the women were babes.

I was just sorry I didn't get to see more of the state even though my highlight there was a trip to Houston to see the Astros play the Mets. They won 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Best of all, Mike Scott struck out Darryl Strawberry 5 times that game and I hated Darryl Strawberry!

If you are a good person and you say your prayers every night, when you die, you will go to Texas.Of course, if you're NOT good, you'll go to ... but if you're a Texan you won't care.

A Texan died and went to hell.

The devil came up to him on the first day, and saw him smiling and giving the high five. "What are you so happy about?" he asked.
"Man, I just love it here. It's like a spring day in Dallas."

The devil walked off pissed, and decided to get him. "I'll turn the heat all the way up. That'll show him."

The next day, the devil checked back with the Texan, only to find him happy once again. "What now?" said the Evil One.
"Man, is this heat great or what? Reminds me of a summer day in San Antonio."

The Devil decided that he has been going about it all wrong. "Tomorrow I'm going to make it colder than an Alaskan winter." He returned the next day to find the Texan shivering and blue, but grinning from ear to ear.
"What could you possibly have to be happy about?"
"Its pretty obvious, isn't it?" replied the Texan. "The Astros must have won the World Series."

And speakin of Texas... Wife and I just got home last week from a whirlwind raod trip to the Grand Canyon (starting from Alabama)... On our way home we took the Southern route on I-10... On one leg of the return, we spent one entire day driving across Texas - We woke up in El Paso and went to bed in Beaumont...

Man, that's one long day... If you've never done the cross-Texas sojourn I highly recommend it once before you die... They give you a merit badge when you complete it...

They give you a merit badge when you complete it...:biggrin:You could work toward several merit badges, in fact, if you made the right stops: American Cultures, American Heritage, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, and Traffic Safety, and auto mechanics (pre-trip maintenance, or repairs, if you break down between Lubbock and Abilene :( ). To name a few. Two of them are white-ringers, meaning they're required to become an Eagle Scout. Got any young 'uns in the car? Lots of opportunities to earn achievements and activity pins for Cub Scouts, too!
