My father practiced <i>civil law</i>. He took divorce related cases as part of his civil law practice. Stephen Baskerville is completely right pointing out that there has been a huge change in the law -- starting with the emergence of a completely separate system of <i>family law</i> created well outside the range of constitutional rights and process. The fact that we lived without this aberration for most of the country's history is proof that it isn't necessary.
