The U.S. military's top officer said Thursday that the Pentagon would have sufficient forces to win if called on to fight a war in North Korea, but the conflict would be more difficult without the intelligence and guidance systems devoted to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that about 200,000 U.S. troops were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving more than 2 million troops available for a war in Asia. ...

The general said that even with nuclear capability, North Korea would be more worrisome to the U.S. military as a source of nuclear materials for terrorists than as a potential military foe.

Just as soon as the GOP affirms its grip in November, Bush needs to go after NoKo and end that grotesquery.

Honest question: how many soldiers are in the armed forces? I thought it was around 1.4 million.

And N.Korea needs to be dealt with. Supposedly they have a ginormous army, but I'm unconvinced they have the funds necessary to keep it functional. Wooden guns painted black and all that.

Its more a question of how many infantry men there are rather than actual numbers, that could be a problem.

It's a moot point anyway. The South Korean military is robust enough these days to defeat the DPRK on their own if they wanted too (assuming no Chinese intervention). They have much better weapons and C4I than the North Koreans by a wide margin.

A little wet work to rid the world of the four-eyed, potbellied egomaniac and his cadre will do what raw force can't. As long as "civilized" countries refrain from assassination, effective handling of tyrants like Kim will be difficult if not impossible.

For once I agree with cerberus.

However, SoKo won't do a thing without our backing.
