The Louisiana Democratic Party turned down eight-term U.S. Rep. William Jefferson on Saturday and endorsed state Rep. Karen Carter, one of a dozen challengers who emerged after Jefferson became the target of a federal bribery investigation.

The State Central Committee's 69-53 vote, at a special meeting to decide whom to endorse in Louisiana's open primaries Nov. 7, was the first time in recent memory that an incumbent had failed to win the state party's endorsement.

Just not a clearcut case of integrity: 69 to 53?

Notice that "state central committee." They're not even trying to hide anymore.

It won't make any diference. He'll be re-elected.

Bet on it.

Lubbock may be right. Just look at what happened in new Orleans. A complete idiot who caused irreparable harm to his constituents, including many deaths, was re-elected by dimwitted or just plain ignorant voters.

If Paris Hilton were a Democrat in La., she'd be one of the brighter members.

If the Dems had any integrity whatsoever, they would have insisted that he resign his seat.

But....but...I thought Democrats were clean cut and never took bribes....

I'll be surprised if Willie "Cold Cash" Jefferson gets reelected. Everyone who might have voted for his ass is now in Texas.

 He was reëlected because his opponent was white. (I fully expect the FiSTed iDioTs to call me a racist for saying that.)

That was my thought at first, but there were other people they could have voted for as well. I'd like to see the full tallies on this vote and see if any of them were actually paid enough to vote for Jefferson.

I've been told by a Louisianna resident of "North LA" that if it weren't for New Orleans, Louisianna State would be Republican. I don't know if that's true, but I'm watching what happens in my neighbor state for the next couple years.

I've always understood dirty politicians in Louisianna were merely considered "colorful".... i.e. a criminal history or criminal activies were a "plus" in terms of getting elected in LA. I am very surprised Willie got the boot.

Mary Landrieu would have lost her Senate seat in the 2002 election if it hadn't been for a last-minute "surge" in votes counted for her in NO. The same was true for the incompetent Gov. Blanco in 2003.
