In less than a week since North Korea claimed to have tested a nuclear weapon, public opinion in the South has turned sharply against a South Korean policy of engaging the enemy in the belief it will eventually bring peace on the divided peninsula.
A JoongAng newspaper poll, several days after the reported nuclear test Monday, found 78 percent of respondents thought South Korea should revise its policy, and 65 percent said South Korea should develop nuclear weapons to protect itself.
Protesters have held nightly candlelight vigils, and some have burned North Korean flags.
"We worry about a war because the regime is so thoughtless," librarian Lee Young-sook said at one rally. "The South Korean people are being held hostage."

Someone's got things figured out. It's about time.
Protesters have held nightly candlelight vigils, and some have burned North Korean flags.
Well now, that was useful. Don't forget to hold hands and sing Kumbayah.

If you want peace, prepare for war. You'd best get your own nukes. Wishful thinking and "good vibes" doesn't get very far with your neighbor to the North. You're going to bleed less if you're armed to the teeth. That's just the way it is.

...and 65 percent said South Korea should develop nuclear weapons to protect itself....Yeah I bet they do, now... Well its not too late for South Korea to shake off this brotherhood miasma they were infected with and return to being the stable power they once were...
Now if we can only get Japan on board...

I'm fairly sure that the Joongang tends to have an old (and therefore considerable) bent towards conservatism.
I certainly wouldn't go about saying 80% of koreans want their own nukes. S. korea is not as simple a place as this.
MANY Koreans (well, many youngish Koreans) view North Koreans as their kindred and would DREAD having to go to war with them. I woulc GUARANTEE that whomever would attack pyeongyang would NOT have a friend in South Korea.
The people are stubborn and in denial (for better or worse) over this whole situation. Like a malaise; everyone just keeps on keepin' on and, if you never read a newspaper Or talk to a white fella, you wouldn't have even CONSIDERED that the Norks let loose a biggin.
The "brotherhood miasma" is stronger than some tests...sorry to say but it's true. And Japan is COMPLETELY on board.
A lot of people I know (Koreans included) really, and TRULY believe that Japan is the threat because they believe the norks would never attack them...and...the scary thing, is, I wouldn't be at ALL surprised if they were right. Look at the last two missile tests shots they've done...where'd they go? Straight over Japan.
A friend of mine is a professor in a University in Busan South Korea. They are having This:http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200610/kt2006101914162311990.htm
right away and my friend is going to be doing a presentation there. I THINK he may be the keynote speaker. If you'd like to read him (and yes, he is a freakin' genius...and YES his PhD happenned to be regarding the LAST time the norks had their little flair up in the 90s:
