MAN OF VISION:
Ex-President Ronald Reagan advanced ideas such as welfare reform and partial privatization of Social Security that are now gaining support.
- Associated Press

While some former presidents disappear into the sunset, Ronald Reagan - who celebrates his 90th birthday on Tuesday - remains a larger-than-life figure.
His legacy and influence endure.

His plan to develop a missile defense system - once ridiculed as "Star Wars" technology - will be the subject of a major debate of the Bush administration.

Reagan appointees are still very much a part of our national life, most notably his national security adviser - now secretary of state - Colin Powell.

Ideas he advanced - welfare reform, the use of religious groups in providing social services, and the partial privatization of Social Security - are now finding broad support.

Another foundation of his legacy was laid 14 years ago when he eased Paul Volcker out as chairman of the Federal Reserve, and a Reagan-dominated Fed board of governors replaced him with the president's choice, Alan Greenspan.

But most of all, Reagan set a national mood that left the country with a new confidence in the final two decades of the 20th century and prepared it for its entry into the 21st century.

"What I'd really like to do is go down in history as the president who made Americans believe in themselves again," he said.

Reagan, who now suffers from Alzheimer's disease, will mark his 90th birthday in seclusion at his home in Bel Air, Calif., while friends and supporters gather in Los Angeles for officially proclaimed "Ronald Reagan Day."

As part of the birthday celebration, a collection of the 40th president's writings, "Reagan, In His Own Hand," will appear in bookstores. It's expected to spark reassessment of both the man and his presidency.

Reagan has been a problem for historians who try to explain how a former Hollywood B-movie star, liberal union leader and genial TV host became an enormously popular two-term Republican president.

Part of the mystery may be explained by the fact that throughout his political career he was underestimated by his rivals.

Reagan was considered a lightweight by opponents from Pat Brown in the 1966 California gubernatorial race to Jimmy Carter and GOP primary rival George Bush in the 1980 presidential campaign.

Yet no president since Reagan has enjoyed his electoral success.

He carried a staggering 49 states in his 1984 re-election, garnering the votes of 54.4 million Americans, nearly 59 percent of the vote.

In the 16 years since then, no candidate has come close (Bill Clinton had less than 43 percent of the vote in 1992.)

Nor did any of Reagan's successors have his gift for one-liners.

Everyone recalls Reagan denouncing the "evil empire" of the Soviet Union and telling "Mr. Gorbachev" to tear down his wall in Berlin.

Or threatening a presidential veto with, "Go ahead, make my day."

Yet the presidency was an unexpected role for the former small-town Illinois boy, born Feb. 6, 1911, in Tampico, whose goal in life seemed limited to becoming a radio sportscaster.

Radio helped Reagan land a Hollywood contract and a series of second-feature movies before he made the leap to fame as a doomed football star in "Knute Rockne-All American."

Reagan eventually appeared in 52 movies before turning to politics, first as a self-described "hemophilic liberal," then, after marrying Nancy Davis, as a passionate conservative.

The turnaround was complete with his televised speech, "A Time for Choosing," for presidential nominee Barry Goldwater in the final days of the 1964 campaign.

That served as a launching pad for two successful campaigns for governor of California, a failed presidential bid in 1976 - and his first successful presidential bid in 1980.

The eight years of the Reagan presidency bear an odd resemblance to that of Clinton's.

Reagan, like Clinton, gained national attention as a governor, built a political base in his home state and eventually ran as an outsider against an incumbent president who was wrestling with a sickly economy and an image problem.

Both took office with bold agendas but suffered a rocky first few months with failed Cabinet nominations (John Tower; Zoe Baird, Kimba Wood) and controversial choices (James Watt; Joycelyn Elders).

But while Clinton's first two years ended in a disastrous congressional election that left both houses in control of the Republicans, the GOP took a majority of the Senate on Reagan's coattails in 1980, and kept that majority until the 1988 elections. The Democrats had the House throughout Reagan's terms.

Both Reagan and Clinton rebounded to win landslide re-elections - only to be faced early in their second terms with scandals (Iran-Contra; Monica Lewinsky) and investigations by special prosecutors.

But Reagan's presidency, despite Democratic opposition in Congress, was marked by a series of successes on Capitol Hill that advanced his agenda, "the Reagan Revolution" - a middle-class tax break, a deep cut in corporate taxes, and a big boost in military spending - that produced the first trillion-dollar budget.

Clinton's foreign policy made a major difference in a few distinct areas - Haiti and Kosovo, for example. But Reagan's foreign policy - which targeted the Soviets, the Sandinistas and the Communist bloc of Eastern Europe - eventually changed the world.

I believe that is a error, the Dems retook the Senate in 1986.

Yes, it certainly is true, nobody's perfect.
It's nice to see that you would ignore the substance of the story just for the opportunity to pick away at a mistake and then commit one yourself. Casting stones in the water does tend to cause splashes and the ripple effect goes on for quite a while afterward.

Well, I'm not perfect, maybe just a little more careful.

Yes, but isn't that what the liberals do best? Pick apart at little details rather than see the big picture and come up with logical plans to help this country?

All you liberals out there should bow to Ronald Reagan and KISS his coattails.

Just a gentle reminder that one ought to exercise a little caution themselves if you're into picky picky at the expense of your own credibility.

Thumbs up on Ron Reagan, and welcome to the Board, you will enjoy it. That picture is wild.

Just for that, I kissed a few symbols of the Reagan legacy: a missile in Iranian hands sold to them by us, a massive military budget and the gap between the rich and poor.

Heck, Reagan shouldn't get all the credit for taking down the Soviet Union, give some of it to Gorbachev, who ended up sacrificing his political career to bring openness in Russia.

Ronald Reagan may have been a above-average or a good President but not a Great President. He can be a inspiring President, that doesn't make him great. LBJ was inspiring to me because he's the only real Texan to be President (both Bushes never had that Texan way like Johnson did) but that doesn't mean LBJ was great.

My 5 Greatest Presidents-
Washington
Lincoln
Teddy Roosevelt
Harry S Truman
FDR

Also, what was the last Conservative program that helped this country? Conservatives aren't coming up with new ideas to help America, they are taking apart old ideas and saying it's gonna help America.

Give me a clue about these missiles we sold to Iran?

Are you possibly talking about Iraq?

After you've given me a heads up on this question, will get back to you with an answer on the rest of your comments. Thanks.

No, Reagan and company sold arms to the Iranians. Remember Iran-Contra?

Even if we sold arms to the Iraqis also, I guess that is gonna be an egg on our faces.

I hope I get an answer soon, I'm sick of somebody trying to be my grammar teacher.

Stay sick, or work on it. You set the standard, those are the consequences.

I see that you are rather prone to exaggeration and personal attacks which are not up to my standards of discourse on facts without resorting to demeaning remarks or lack of substantive exchange.

If it makes you too sick to have what you do thrown back at you, then it hardly merits further attempts to demonstrate to you exactly how it comes across. You evidently did not understand or grasp the reason for the English lesson and obviously prefer to adopt the stance of a wounded warrior.

Enjoy your pain, it isn't worth bothering you further, though it might have been enjoyable for both of us.

Warlady ......

Their tired old points don't even merit a response. Their answer to all of Clintoon's shananigans is NEVER to deal with the issue, but to change the subject (classic lib response when the merits don't suit them).

They'll always point to two or three problems from the Reagan years as proof that he was just as corrupt and inept as Bill Clintoon. There is simply no comparing the recent eight years of wall-to-wall never ending scandels, etc, to eight years of an ALLEGED two or three incidents. But they'll keep doing it, because it's the only answer they've got.

Don't waste your good mind on them.

GOD BLESS RONALD REAGAN, whose greatness will long outlive the silly efforts of his detractors!!

I believe funding the rebels in Nicaragua back then was illegal which makes the move to fund the 'freedom fighters' really unethical. I bet you loved the 'freedom fighting' Pinochet regime also. I mean, Pinochet was an good right-winger, sure he killed alot of people and repressed the masses but he's still better than those leftists, right?

As for the Buddhist thing, I would have been there to say anything about what Gore thought it was.

I guess all the groovy right-wingers will take the Ayatollah, Pinochet and the Contras over anything else. Eh?

How bout we admit both presidencys violated the law and leave it at that?

Well.. maybe you misunderstood a bit of what I did say.

We illegally sold arms to Iran, Iran said they would try to get hostages out of Lebannon, we used the money to illegally fund the Contras.

I'm not completely sure about this, how long did it take to get all of those hostages out? about 6 freakin years. Those Iranians sure did help us.

What opinion do you hold of the Ayatollah's right-wing islamic regime? What about Pinochet's regime?
