Column: With USC Losing, Bowl Championship Series Will Have No Answers for Questions Ahead

By RALPH D. RUSSO AP Sports Writer

Oct 29, 2006 (AP)— For those who enjoy BCS chaos, the fun starts now. Southern California's loss to Oregon State was the first and most significant step toward giving the Bowl Championship Series an impossible task of putting together a title game that will satisfy everybody.

The Beavers' 33-31 upset Saturday had fans of highly ranked one-loss teams rejoicing from Gainesville, Fla., to Berkeley, Calif.

Don't get too down, Trojans. While you gave up control of your destiny in the championship race, you're not out of it either.ABCNews.com (http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=2614376)

Time for a legitimate 10-, 12-, or 16-team playoff to determine the national champion.

I think the BCS championship game chaos begins this week, with the #1 and #2 ranked teams playing each other in the final game of the regular season, and then possibly meeting each other AGAIN in the BCS championship game.

If you play for Ohio State or Michigan and your team wins, you are going to scream bloody murder if you have to play the same team you've just beaten in the BCS championship game.

If you are on the team that loses that final game of the regular season, you are going to scream "REMATCH" because you could be #1 if you win the BCS championship game.

If there are a few undefeated teams left after this Saturday, I'm sure THEY will be screaming bloody murder if they are not selected to play in the BCS championship game. (Rutgers?)

What if after your last game of the regular season, you have one loss just like the loser of the OSU/Michigan game? I'm sure those teams will be screaming bloody murder, too if they aren't selected.

I think you're right: They need to have more games in the regular season or at least have a playoff system.

Been saying this since the BCS system started. A computer picking the best teams is bullshit! In every other sport, we have playoffs. Why not college football?

I'm for a play-off too, but I think each conference should have chamipionship games too, this would help establish teams for the BCS playoffs. Currenlty the SEC-East and SEC-West have a play-off (this year I'm pretty sure it's going to be Florida vs. Arkansas). As for this year, I'm hoping against all hope Arkansas can kick some gator-tail, so that would certainly be one less one-loss team vying for a chance at the BCS playoff.

Why not college football?Supposedly the college presidents are against a playoff. It detracts from "academics" (never mind the fact that most teams have one or two--or more--"bye weeks" during the regular season, and that they could get all the preliminaries done by Christmas without adversely affecting study hours; look at how much time is taken up with "March Madness," which is also exam time at most universities that use a quarter system calendar).

The socialist system that has been in place (where there can be a whole boatload of "winners" after the bowl games are completed) probably fits the political whims of the prezzes a lot better.

OK, then we need to do away with March Madness, you know that big college basketball tournament we get to watch each year when they have a playoff type system to find out who the best in the country is? And before that are Conference tournaments and championships.

I consider academics a weak argument. Bring on a playoff system and leave my March Madness alone!!
