RNC asks Steele to replace Mehlman

By Ralph Z. Hallow
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
November 10, 2006

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, whose party just lost both chambers of Congress, will leave his position in January, and the post as party chief has been offered to Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele.
"It is true," Mr. Mehlman told The Washington Times when asked about reports last night that he would resign. "It's something I decided over the summer. No one told me I needed to. In fact, folks wanted me to stay."
Mr. Mehlman said he "told the White House over the summer it was my decision" to leave the RNC post, "win, lose or draw."
Also last night, Republican officials told The Times that Mr. Steele, who lost his bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, has been sought out to succeed Mr. Mehlman as national party chairman. Those Republican officials said Mr. Steele had not made a decision whether to take the post, as of last night.
Other Republican Party officials said some Republican National Committee (RNC) members, including state party chairmen, have mounted a move to have Mr. Steele succeed Mr. Mehlman.

This would be a great move IMHO

But they said that President Bush's political adviser Karl Rove, who is Mr. Mehlman's mentor, would rather see Mr. Steele serve in the president's Cabinet, perhaps as secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

This would be a stupid move IMHO because it doesn't matter how many blacks, hispanics, asians that W appoints to cabinets they are called tokens anyway. If he were put in a position to run the 'Pubs election campaigns he would be given much much more credibility. This is something that the 'Rats wouldn't even do! This would be the best thing to happen to the GOP since Newts contract with America.

Yes give Steele the RNC chairman job he's smart and has charisma.
He does not belong in the bush whitehouse because all he would be is a target for leftists to call him a 'token'.

Would Steele be an option for Prez or Vice-Prez in '08? I don't know enough about him.

For VP IMHO but if he keeps a high profile as RNC chairman then I think running for president is a good idea. The democrats have never criticised a black republican running for president before and it will backfire in their faces.

Both parties are loading blacks into their rifles for '08. The GOP knows that Obama is going to be the DNC's boy, so they're placing the knight adjacent to their queen.

Steele needs to be in a position of power. He's a good, common-sense conservative who was very good at public relations throughout his campaign. And as disappointing as his loss was, it doesn't mean his career is over. Mehlman was also good at PR, and he raised a lot of money, but Steele will carry the party back to its conservative roots, should he replace Mehlman.

Would Steele be an option for Prez or Vice-Prez in '08? I don't know enough about him.Unfortunately, his highest position held that I am aware of is Lt. Governor. That's a disadvantage for the most part.

But Steele is respectable, and I would like to see him hold a position on a national level.

I know what you are saying, however unless it is an elected position a cabinet position wouldn't be perceived as much more than a token position. Head of the RNC could/would give him some serious exposure!
