LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Student leaders at a California college have touched off a furor by banning the Pledge of Allegiance at their meetings, saying they see no reason to publicly swear loyalty to God and the U.S. government.
The move by Orange Coast College student trustees, the latest clash over patriotism and religion in American schools, has infuriated some of their classmates -- prompting one young woman to loudly recite the pledge in front of the board on Wednesday night in defiance of the rule.
"America is the one thing I'm passionate about and I can't let them take that away from me," 18-year-old political science major Christine Zoldos told Reuters.
"The fact that they have enough power to ban one of the most valued traditions in America is just horrible," Zoldos said, adding she would attend every board meeting to salute the flag.
The move was lead by three recently elected student trustees, who ran for office wearing revolutionary-style berets and said they do not believe in publicly swearing an oath to the American flag and government at their school. One student trustee voted against the measure, which does not apply to other student groups or campus meetings.

Yank every federal dollar from that school (and any federal student loans permanently from those trustees) for the remainder of this year and next. Not as a condition that they return to reciting the pledge, rather as a civics lesson on how their bread gets buttered.

The school should receive no funding either state or federal. They were wearing revolutionary style berets..... Why aren't they being expelled? If this school wants to be a madrasses, there should be a flight of the rest of the students taking their money with them.

I don't know enough guys that would even care to waste their time with such pencil-neck lightweights. That being said, they'd better not approach us and START anything.

Isn't banning anything supposed to be anathema on college campuses?

You're not supposed to talk about that, DTS. Colleges are officially declared to be complete free speech zones and anyone who says anything diffrent needs to be shut away in a prison for being intolerant.

Exactly! Cut their funding, revoke their citizenship and send them, say, to France where they'll be welcomed.

They didn't have to ban it. Those who did not wish to participate could have just recused themselves during the pledge.

Exactly. Which is what anybody with any class does when a ritual is in progress that he doesn't like, or doesn't approve of, or doesn't want to participate in, or that goes against his religion, or his principles, if he has any, which he may not but that's not the topic.

They refuse to pledge allegiance to the government?
Sure they do.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The pledge has never been widely understood to be an oath of allegiance to the government. The very idea of pledging allegiance to the government is anathema to the America political ethos. It is a pledge of allegiance to the principles for which the American flag and the American nation stand, to a unique political heritage, to the Constitution under the Declaration of Independence, which declares that God, not the state, is the Source and Guarantor of human rights. These human rights are therefore unalterable.
Bullshit! These atheist, socialist thugs object to the Pledge, not because they embrace the notion of individual liberty, unalterable human rights and the proposition of limited government, but because the Pledge utterly denies the validity of everything they stand for: the suppression of human rights and the absolute allegiance to nothing other than the state.
The phrase “under God” was added to the Pledge in the face of the rise of communism, which effectively makes the state god, the arbitrary arbiter of human rights. It was added as result of a national concern that the American pledge could be construed, as its original socialist author had vainly hoped, to be an oath of allegiance to the state rather than an oath to the American political ethos.
"I am an atheist and a socialist, and if you know your history, you know that 'under God' was inserted during the McCarthy era and was directly designed to destroy my ideology."
You got that right, you son of bitch, you friggin’ thug. You’re ideology needs destroying. It’s one thing to freely hold it; it’s quite another thing to think you have the right to impose it. McCarthy, mcnarthy. Your name is Stalin!

It will be handy when time travel gets perfected. We can just send this sort back in time to Russia around October 1917. They'll fit right in with the other Bolshevik idiots.
