By MATT SEDENSKY
Associated Press Writer

MIAMI (AP) -- A man who had to vote in a Catholic church has sued election officials, claiming that casting a ballot amid crucifixes and anti-abortion banners violates the principles of church and state separation.

Jerry Rabinowitz, a nonobservant Jew from Delray Beach, filed the lawsuit in federal court Friday. In it, Rabinowitz says elections officials refused to remove or cover religious items at Emmanuel Catholic Church when he voted last month.

"The effect of the defendant's conduct in this case is nothing if not government endorsement of religion," the lawsuit read......http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CHURCH_PRECINCT_LAWSUIT?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US

Hey, I never thought of this one before. My polling place has always been a public school. Now I know I can sue because it "has the primary effect of advancing a particular religion over other religious" positions; that religion being secular humanism. Whelp, time to talk with a lawyer. And to think I've put up with it all these years.

Had the voting machines in the local Democrat Party offices instead would you guys be going "Hey, Rabinowitz, f*ck off."? Or how about a mosque?

Voting in a local Democrat Party office might raise conflict of interest questions, and what might happen with the votes after hours. As for a mosque I would not be surprised if one such as this mosque (http://www.toledomuslims.com/center.asp)were used for a polling place; it is huge and probably has wide halls and corridors to accomodate many people. Were I to vote there I would ignore the surroundings, do my civic duty, and go home.
