Does Katie Couric's Stumble Signal Hillary Clinton's Fall?

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

By Susan Estrich

Jon Friedman from MarketWatch wins.

How long did this take?

Maybe America wasn’t ready for a woman anchor after all. I kid you not. From Monday:

“America wasn't truly ready for the first solo woman evening-news anchor, let alone someone smart and attractive with pretensions to sounding puckish and hip...”

Now consider: if this is what Katie gets after three months, while she’s admittedly still finding her sea legs (if I can refer to them), just imagine, imagine what we’re in for with Hillary.

If you don’t think her loss is your loss, think again.

If you don’t think her speed bump is your speed bump, wait to see how you feel when they tell you we’re not ready.

Take a look at what “they’re” doing to Katie Couric, and then tell me what’s coming next.

This is the problem with only having first/only/one woman in high places, which is still better than the other immediate alternative, having none.

You can tell me all the reasons it’s wrong, misguided, and unfair – that Katie is only one woman, what about Diane Sawyer, what about the quality of her show, thank you very much, or experience, and why should all women be judged by her, especially women, of whom there are more than a few, to judge by the ratings, who prefer their news from someone else, who happens to be male, at least – but here’s the kicker.

It doesn’t matter.....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,236422,00.html

I love the way she simply assumes this is all because Couric is a woman.

There is way too much noise and activity surrounding Hilary... If she isnt looking like a red herring to everyone yet, then yall simply arent looking... Hilary is a media distraction - nothing else...

But of course! And if Couric had been black, Estrich would have assumed it was all because she was a black woman.

Now if Katie had been Karl, ah! then yes, it would have been all about incompetence and all that.

Maybe the libs would like another law. A monitoring chip in every television set. Not watching Katie would be reported and the tv set owner arrested and prosecuted for being sexist.

Here is where Susie's argument falls flat on its face. Couric's ratings started high and fell every day. Which means, more people were willing to watch Katie Couric delivering the evening news that any guy on any channel. It was only when Cutsie Katie proved inept individuals started changing the channel.

Gender, race, hair color, and species are all secondary to the content. Katie Couric is the face of CBS news, perhaps not the most god awful news on the planet, but its certainly in the bottom three.

Susan Estrich is in total denial that news media is probably the MOST sexist industry. But then again, when all else fails, perpetuate the victim status to hide the fact that nobody wants to hear the liberal drivel.

What Jag Wife said. Katie's poor showing has nothing to do with "what the country is ready for." Katie Couric got the job for all the wrong reasons. The only right reason would have been a rep as a first-rate journalist, but that's precisely what Katie didn't have. Katie made her rep, and her money, on the entertainment side of liberal television. I have yet to tune Katie in because it would be, to me, no different from tuning in The Morning Show or Babysitting with Katie or Shove It, Christians or whatever it was she used to rule over before she took over ruling the Dan Rather Hour.

Katie Couric's a sorry liberal joke and America knows it. But it isn't actually Katie's fault that she's not doing well. It's mainstream media's fault. What America is no longer "ready for" is more liberal slanted news, more liberal lies about what's going on, more liberal pretense to reporting news.

America is not ready for CBS Liberal Opinion Hour, with Katie Couric or anybody else.
