The South Sucks?::By Doug Giles (http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/DougGiles/2007/01/13/the_south_sucks)
“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?” -Charles Rangle, New York Congressman, 2006
If you listen to the Ditsy Chicks, if you like Rosie O’Doggerel and if you think John Kerry (http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/DougGiles/2007/01/13/the_south_sucks#) is cool, then more than likely you assume the South sucks. Yep, our current culture has been brow beaten by the loons on the Left into viewing the South as societal swill.
In Hollywood, the hedonistic thought thugs make certain that Southerners are tarred and feathered as inbred, Ricky Bobby, moonshine slammin’, KKKMart shoppin’, fat back eatin’, cousin humpin’ square dancers with three teeth and an IQ of 50.
The liberal Belief Police want America to hate the South because the South represents the Secular Regressive’s (SR) chief political and cultural (and armed, I might add) high hurdle.
The autoerotic “elite,” which form the intellectually line bred gene pool of the soulless Left, are hell bent to bar from our borders all praises and practices of the principles which have made the South substantial. What are the things that make Dixie so darn good?

Good article.
The Left imagines the South as it would be if the Left ran the South. Weird thing is, the Left has neither the brains nor the imagination to see this.

" . . . Real women. Unlike the female chauvinist pigs on the Left, Southern women are charming and ladylike and like their menfolk, they have backbones of steel. Also, note to single guys: from Georgia peaches to Mississippi belles, there’s no doubt about it: southern women are prettier. . . . "
Never forget that Condi is a Southern Belle.

There was an interesting study done on predictions for the future of the South done recently. I cannot remember the group who did it. The future over the next 20 or so years was very optimistic, both economically and socially. If anyone has read it and knows where to find it I would appreciate the link.

Well, the South's been growing by leaps and bounds, what's been stagnating is the Upper Midwest, the entire Left Coast (except for illegal immigration, of course), as well as New England.
• Southerners wrote the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Bill of Rights
• The civil war was not a true civil war, nor was it driven by slavery
• Southern women had independence, equality, and freedom decades before suffrage
• The South, not the West, started the Hollywood movie scene, blues, jazz, and rock and roll.
Facts can be problematic for condesecending liberals. Eagle1, you need to take a trip up to Northern California, my oldest son who's attending "one of the most prestigious colleges" on the Left Coast had to abruptly move this weekend because he caught his roommate in a sexual act with a dog.
The South, the Lower MidWest, the central West, and maybe Alaska define "American culture" to me, all other parts of the US are embodiments of European culture as far as I'm concerned.
The only two things wrong with the South, which has "risen again" are the two products of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, but they are faux Southerners IMO.

Well As a PROUD YANKEE I still like this thread. I have always maintianed that in the last 50 years the South has maintained a bad reputation that for the most part no longer exsist. Anything in the South that could be considered bad is the same all over because of the decline in morality accross the USA.
IMO there is no problem in the South that is unique only to it, and no solution the North or West can provide since we all suffer from the same problems.

What a bunch of garbage. The South (especially the deep South) is a sucking sewer and I was grateful when I was able to move out of it for places where trailer-living didn't apparently house half the population. My time in LA (that's Lower Alabama) showed me all I needed to know about the South and many, but not all, of the stereotypes are correct.
...as the South makes up the overwhelming majority of the armed forces who protect our country and are willing to take a bullet for these ungrateful and derisive jackasses. The South accounts for 35% of the population, but 41% of the military recruits. ...emphasis mine. Now boys and girls, can anybody tell me what's wrong with this statement? At this point Giles credibility (supposing he had some) melts. Bonus question...who can tell me the two states with the highest number of casualties in the Iraq war? Anyone? I'll give you a hint...they ain't in the South.
A sense of morals and religion?! Puh-leeze! How about a sense of intolerance and ignorance? And i'm not just talking generic Muslim-hating here. I watched as those Southern "gentlemen" Giles effuses about insult Catholics, Buddhists and a friend of mine because he's of Indian ancestry, with Hindu parents but looked like what they think a Muslim looks like. Oh, and the race bit? Yeah, I still heard a great many of these same "gentlemen" and at least two "ladies" use the "n-word" in casual conversation like it was no big deal. Fantastic...
Gentlemen? Ha! If you've ever seen an episode 'Cops' in Houston, Atlanta etc you'll be dissolved of that notion...its disturbingly accurate...
And the rest of it is just living off the past and supposed Southern "accomplishments". Give me a break. Don't even get me started about the Civil War either. You lost. Get over it. I find it double ironic that the same people who fly the traitorous flag of the Confederacy also claim to be the most patriotic and "love America.
The really good thing about the South is that thanks to modern media and connectivity as well as a flow of Northerners retiring it's becoming less like the Old South. Virginia is pretty decent now, as are the eastern halves of the Carolinas to varying degrees.

Southerners (a few) made you think they're all "intolerant and ignorant", that is an elitist hypocritical attitude. You are officially a steroeotype now. Fantastic...
Gentlemen? Ha! If you've ever seen an episode 'Cops' in Houston, Atlanta etc you'll be dissolved of that notion...its disturbingly accurate...
Cops doesn't reflect ANY notion, except the obvious one that most suspected criminals don't generally behave as "gentlemen" anywhere.
And the rest of it is just living off the past and supposed Southern "accomplishments". Give me a break.
Quick, name something uniquely "Northern". And if writing the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Bill of Rights is considered merely "living off the past", I'm down with that!
Don't even get me started about the Civil War either. You lost. Get over it.
You mean the North won?
But I'd disagree that anyone should "get over it", history should never be ignored, even if it's unpleasant.
I find it double ironic that the same people who fly the traitorous flag of the Confederacy also claim to be the most patriotic and "love America.
No more "double ironic" than a Northerner bashing the GOP as the party of racist, ignorant, Bible-thumpers.
The really good thing about the South is that thanks to modern media and connectivity as well as a flow of Northerners retiring it's becoming less like the Old South. Virginia is pretty decent now, as are the eastern halves of the Carolinas to varying degrees.

But then, Eden had a snake ... oh, well.Ya just gotta know when and where to NOT walk in bare feet, Bro... Last summer about 9 pm, We were takin our new puppy outside for a nature break before we put him to bed for the night... And Im really bad about walking out on that porch in my bare feet... He would have tagged me for sure...
Life in the South... ;)
The Deep South is the best kept secret in this country - and I hope it stays that way... Low property taxes, low cost of living, good manners, good food, and conservative politics...
And the best part is that liberal jackasses dont last here long, as evidenced by a certain previous post... I find it ironic that someone can post such viscious venom about the South, accusing us of prejudice and bigotry, when his whole post is nothing but bitter bigotry... But his kind are so self-absorbed that they never see their own sins...

Here is a thought. South got a bum rap with "Deliverance." As usual people watching the talking heads on the tele or the movies think of it as the Gospel as told by Hollywood, so it must be true.
In my travels it would be more succinct to take any reference of the South out of Deliverance and replace it with the backwoods of Vermont, Connecticut, New York (the state), Washington St., etc. and you would have a more realistic view of what I have seen.
Besides I dont play the banjo out on my porch with my inbred kids, we have moved up in the world. Now we are listening to Ipods in the back of our SUV.

I've lived in the South for more than half my life (44 years in the South, 30 years in the North) and the fact that we decided to spend the rest of our lives here in Texas speaks volumes about our opinion of the South. I think that, all things considered, the people in the South are much more civil than the people in the Northeast and are certainly more patriotic. (EDIT: From my experience, I think that the people in the Northeast are more racist than people in the South.)
My wife and I were both born in Pennsylvania, but we now consider ourselves to be Texans. Our eldest son (who posts here as conservatour) was born in Pennsylvania, but he considers himself to be a Texan and he married a Texan. Despite the fact that our youngest son was born in New York State, he considers himself to be a Texan and he also married a Texan (and our grandkids are Texans). Granted, we don't like the bugs, snakes, destructive critters like Raccoons and Armadillos, or the heat, but we are willing to put up with all that because of the rest the advantages.
Add to all that the fact that Texas has no income tax and under Texas Homestead laws, since we reached age 65 we are exempt from county property taxes and our school taxes are frozen at the level they were at age 65. And I love Chicken Fried Steak.
Don't get me wrong, in the part of Pennsylvania where I was born (Punxsutawney) people are as civil and as patriotic as people in the South (and they vote heavily Republican). However, I can't say the same about most of the rest of the Northeast.

I love Pennsylvania.
One of my dear friends from Sunbury lost her mother last month at age 95. Mom Stoddard woke up that morning and said she wasn't hungry --which was unusual, and went back to sleep. About 10:00 a.m. she woke up and said she believed she could eat a bowl of chocolate ice cream. She ate the ice cream and went back to sleep. Never woke up. Just died peacefully. The dear old soul had never had a Medicare claim. Never been sick. Never seen a doctor for any reason.
Which has nothing to do with being Southern, but when I saw that NT is originally from Pennsylvania, it made me think of Mom Stoddard. She was a dear old soul, and made the best Shoo Fly Pie in the universe.

You make rivels with the same dough that you use for making egg noodles, but instead of rolling it out and cutting strips for noodles, you "pill it," by working it in your fingers until it's crumbled. When your Navy Beans or White Beans are cooked, you drop the dough into the beans at a full, rolling boil [just like you would drop egg noodles into soup].
Beans and Rivels. It's just basically White Beans/Navy Beans with egg noodles [only smaller].
Yum.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that a lot of that Southern "prejudice" was government sanctioned by state and local government officials, which I might add were controlled by democrats, thank you.
My uncle lived in Greensboro, NC and knew some people who worked at the Woolworth (the "lunch counter sit-in"). Most folks at Woolworth would have been just fine to serve up anybody of any color who had the money, but might I remind you that there were local government officials (democrats, thank you) who would have either vandalized their storefront, suddenly found a "health code violation" or something. Most of the average people didn't care whether you were black or white, so long as your money was green, but they lived in fear of the local powers that be, most of whom were Klan members.
Seems like any corruption I see going on in North Carolina involves the Democrat party. In 9 years of living here, I have yet to hear otherwise. Our local fishwrap tries to show the elites in the Northeast and Hollywood just how "with it" they are by being a leftist rag, and then they were shocked when subscriptions and advertising sales took a nosedive.
And the democrats in the House and Senate today would prefer you didn't know that.

Today, as in the past, the Democrat Party is the party of racism.
Here is an excerpt from my essay on Leftism:
I have never understood why blacks retain their allegiance to the Democrat Party. Liberal Democrats have relegated millions of blacks to living on welfare, to living in sub-standard housing, and to sending their children to sub-standard schools. Liberal Democrats have forced millions of blacks to be slaves totally dependent on the government for handouts. In contrast, for nearly 100 years in the South, the Republican Party was the only party that allowed blacks to vote in primary elections and become party members, and proportionally more Republicans than Democrats voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Law. Without Republican support, the 1964 Civil Rights Act would never have been enacted into law.

SWEET TEA--nuff said.
i just love the look on a southerners face when they come up north and ask for sweet tea at a restaurant. the waitress gives them tea and some sugar to put in themselves. boy, i have never seen somebody get so angry over a drink!!
cracks me up every time. dont care for the stuff personally, but i can appreciate the difference between sweet tea and some tea with sugar

Aw, thanks Lubbock (Blush!)
I might add that for some reason, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Biden (who are NOT senators in South Carolina, btw) saw fit to show their faces and spew their anti-war pap at an MLK march in Columbia, SC. Something to do with the fact that the Confederate flag is still on the grounds. Might I add it was placed on the top of the Capitol building in 1963 by Fritz Hollings, a democrat governor.
Somebody want to tell me why these imbeciles had to show up in states that weren't their districts, and why can't we just honor MLK today? :flame:
Leave it to a liberal democrat to ruin things for people. FoxNews was quick to show that their little "rally" was VERY sparsely attended. :finger:

That's an easy one.
They're running for President. Dodd has announced; I'm not sure whether Biden has announced, but he's made it known that he's running.
Want to guess which voting bloc they were courting with their anti-Battle Flag rant? [That's an easy one, too.]
They are running.

Sugar does not dissolve in cold iced tea. Here in the south the eateries have to good graces to make it sweet in advance. The only question left is, "do you want lemon with that". It is just a concept lost on the north :-)

Sweet tea is one of the crowning achievements of the South (along with sour dough biscuits and butter). You put the sugar in while the tea is still hot, so that it blends in evenly. Then you cool it or serve over ice. Delicious!

Sweet-tea is my Bubba's life's blood. Personally I can't stand the dirty water myself, but I have come to have an appreciation for it (because ALL of my family members HAVE to have it, :smirky: ).
I thought of another one, Lubbock -- corn nuggets. My husband adores them almost as much as his hush-puppies, grits, and stumpknockers. Oh yeah, and did anyone mention fried okra? And EVERYBODY knows that the proper beverage to serve when enjoying moon-pies, is an R-ah Cee Cola belly-washer! :smirky:

And fried pies. Any fruit will do, but I like cherry best.
You're right about the RC Cola. Someone said grape, but RC Cola is what goes best with a Moonpie.
And Dr Pepper is so Southern . I can remember when you couldn't get Dr Peper anywhere but Texas and Oklahoma. At the original bottling plant here in Texas you can get it that is still made with [I]real sugar.
I can also remember when you couldn't get Coors Beer east of the Mississippi.

Been there and done that myself. People offered up to $25/case - and this was back in the mid '70's............. But I didn't sell any of mine. Too damn precious; to damn good....... Once Coors crossed the Mississippi, the price went down and the taste went to hell. Take out the bootlegging allure and it was just another can of beer............:smirky:

<RANT>Begin rant....
The really good thing about the South is that thanks to modern media and connectivity as well as a flow of Northerners retiring it's becoming less like the Old South.<RANT off=""></RANT></RANT>
Congratulations! You've been indoctrinated! Of all the silliness in your rant, the quote above really takes the cake. I doubt that you have any understanding of what the "Old South" was and was not. And anyone who thinks that "modern media" and "Northerners" will put the South right is, to put it diplomatically, less than observant.
I don't know what you found so distrubing about lower Alabama, but I grew up there and would not have left save for the fact that my career interests had me gravitate toward larger cities (in the South). The inaccuracies in your rant make me think that you probably don't have the ability to see and appreciate what's around you.. mainly because you insist upon having it filtered through the ridiculous, masterbatory, elitist garbage that is the liberal mindset. You can find the worst of a place, anywhere. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you understand it by giving it a cursory once-over.
As for the war between the states, it was pretty-much inevitable that the two thoroughly incompatible economic systems would come to blows. The war was more about competing economic powers and a lot less about cultural or altruistic ideals than what passes for modern education is likely to teach you.
Re: gastronomical delights:

Cerb obviously came to the south with a firmly entrenched predisposition, and then colored all of his experiences in accordance with it, thereby modifying his perceptions to fit the predisposition rather than taking an objective look at it. Throughout my military career I had the chance to expose many other military members from the north to life in the south, both black and white, and to a man, they came away with the exact opposite impression from cerb. A couple of them have retired down south now. Stuff like that (cerb's experience) happens when you let your own prejudices cloud your ability to look at something objectively.

I've lived in most every region of the country, and I've yet to find one where most people aren't decent and good to know.
And that includes the Deep South. There are always the assholes who hate people from other regions. But they are always losers, who aren't all that welcome where they live, either.
Many states in the South have made great strides in improviing education and standards of living. Racism is dying rapidly almost everywhere.
The jokes are about 30 years out of date. And guys, the Civil War ended over a hundred and thirty years ago. It's time to set the resentment aside.
Thank you for saying that. I live in South Dakota. I have a brother who lives in the South. I have another brother who lives on the west coast. I have lived in most regions of this country. I found great people in all of those places. I was at another board where this article was posted and it was a whole thread of 'stomp on the Northerners'. I can understand Southerners getting tired of the sterotypes, but it doesn't help to stereotype the rest of the country back. I moved back to this state after living other places around the country for 20+ years. It has decent, hardworking, friendly people. The only really stupid thing I think SD did was when they elected Tom Daschle. I moved back in time to help vote him out.
