Police Chief Richard Knoebel says he wasn't about to take the easy way out when he accidentally drove past a stopped school bus with its emergency lights flashing.

For violating traffic laws, Knoebel wrote himself a ticket for $235, docked himself four points on his driving record and paid the fine the next day.

At least he was honest enough to admit it and hold himself accountable. For that I commend him.

A lot of people think the school-bus stop laws in the U.S. and Canada are dumb. In California, young children (elementary-school age) have to be walked across the street by the driver, who carries a red stop sign with him.

In Europe (not that we really care what they do there, but I present it here for comparison), school buses are not yellow and they don't have the flashing red lights (http://www.eu.dodea.edu/newcomer.htm) (incorrectly called "emergency lights" in the article). Instead, children have to learn to look both ways before crossing the street--and not cross in front of or immediately behind the bus. They--and older children, if any, getting off the bus with them--have to be responsible for their safety. This sometimes poses problems for children of American service personnel who may have developed bad habits of crossing the road or street in front of American school buses knowing that the driver was watching out for their safety.
