Body of Missing Pennsylvania Toddler Discovered at Abandoned Playground

BRADDOCK, Pa. — After a two-day search in freezing temperatures, police and emergency workers found the body of a missing 23-month-old girl in a wooded area near Pittsburgh.

The girl's body was discovered at 3:13 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, and later identified by officials at the scene as Nyia Miangel Page, said Tom Vislay, an investigator with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.

"Yes, she's identified as the missing girl," he said, declining to give details about the manner or circumstances of the girl's death.

An autopsy will be conducted Monday.

Rankin Mayor Nicholas Glova said earlier Sunday that investigators had found the body of a girl about four blocks from where Nyia Page lived. He said authorities were doing everything possible to find out what happened over the past 24 hours.

BRADDOCK, Pa. — The toddler whose body was found a few blocks from her home the day after she went missing died of hypothermia, authorities said Monday.

But the death of 23-month-old Nyia Miangel Page was a homicide, the Allegheny County medical examiner said.

Dr. Karl E. Williams ruled the death a homicide because he "feels it is unlikely she got there under her own power." The little girl was barefoot and wearing only a sweater and diaper when she disappeared. PITTSBURGH — The father of a young girl who died of exposure had knocked her unconscious because he was angry she wouldn't go to bed, then took her outside in freezing temperatures and left her there, police said before the man's arraignment Thursday.

Nyia Miangel Page, who was about to turn 2, was found dead Sunday on a wooded knoll about a 10 minute walk from the family's home. Tiny footprints in the snow suggested she had gotten up and wandered around before she died, police said.

Her father, William Lorenzo Page, 23, of Braddock, was arrested on charges of criminal homicide, kidnapping, false reports and simple assault.

Page told police he woke up early Saturday and found the girl awake and playing near a mirror in the hallway, according to the criminal complaint.
