Despite frequent and vocal complaints from critics of the world's largest retail chain, Wal-Mart "has arguably done more to help ordinary Americans, especially the poor and disadvantaged, than any other institution in our society," according to the authors of a new book being released nationally on Monday.

"Wal-Mart does far more for America's working class than any labor union, bloated federal bureaucracy or pandering politician," Richard Vedder, co-author of "The Wal-Mart Revolution" and a visiting scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, told Cybercast News Service in a telephone interview.

Because of this and other factors, "Wal-Mart is saving America," added Vedder, who also serves as a distinguished professor of economics at Ohio University.

Makes a lotta sense to me. I'm thankful that there is a Wal-Mart that I can go to, & knowing that Mr. Walton was a fellow Arkansawyer makes me equally proud.

"Wal-Mart does far more for America's working class than any labor union, bloated federal bureaucracy or pandering politician,". . .I won't gainsay anything Vedder has to say about the benefits of Wal-Mart. And the best of luck to him finding an employee who knows where anything is located or what it's good for.

"Wal-Mart, what's that? Do they, like, make walls there?"

We now have four WalMarts in Lubbock.

FOUR! I can't hardly believe that a city of barely 200K can support four WalMarts, but you can drive by any one of them at any time a find the parking lot nearly full.

All four are SuperCenters.

I think the total number of employees for the four of them is somewhere around 1,200.

Our second Target also just opened. I think all this city does is shop!

What did you expect? You have hundreds of female college students, including my daughter.

" . . . Must be stupid Walmarts in yer necka the woods. . . . "

Exactly.

I depends entirely on the store. In Vernon, Texas, it's organized, and the employees know what they're doing; in Madill, Oklahoma, the place is a Pig Sty; in Ardmore, Oklahoma, the store is clean and the employees are good.

Management.

I am really suprised at the stigma Wal-mart gets from a lot of people. I personally love wal-mart, and the $5 DVD section can't be beat. In one of my classes the other day we had a discussion about the pros and cons of wal-mart. Many of my classmates thought it was a dirty store with morons for employees. While I cannot speak to the intelligence of the workers I have not had a single experience that would give me the impression that they are stupid.
What suprises me is the same people who bash wal-mart love to go to target. Do they really think they are better than others because they pay $2 more for each item?
I know that things change from store to store, but it seems to me that those who prefer target to wal-mart on principle look down upon people who want to save a buck.

We have "stupids" working in the Wal-Mart here. They are the norm. Educated clerks are the exception.
The next time some worker pushes by me to get to where he's going without saying "excuse me" is going to be mopping up 50 feet of floor with his lips.

I don't know anyone personally who looks down on WalMart, or looks down on people who shop at WalMart.

I've shopped at Target since I moved to Lubbock for two reasons: #1. Target is about five blocks from my house and I never have to leave my neighborhood to get there; I would have to deal with Loop 289 to get to the WalMart closest to me, and the only reason that anyone should ever get on the Loop is if they have a number on the side of their car; #2. The WalMart closest to me is an absolute MESS!

Now that we have one out here south of town, and now that I've been there and found it clean, organized, and it appears that the employees are actually working for WalMart, I'll shop there.
