Oscars contender Forest Whitaker said an annual awards show held to honor black actors should not be interpreted as a political statement against the Academy Awards (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=%22Academy+Awards%22&sid=breitbart.com).


"It's about people being celebrated by a community. It's very clearly not a protest or a statement," Whitaker (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=whitaker&sid=breitbart.com) said at an Oscars nominees luncheon here.

They've given themselves so many reasons to create other awards that (to me) the Oscars just seem really watered down. It's more of a fashion show than anything. Then there are the political rants that I don't care for. I quit watching the Oscars back when Elia Kazan won his Oscar.

It looked like half the people in the audience stood on their feet in applause while the other half just sat on their asses with their arms crossed in disgust. The most glaring example of this was Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Goldie just sat on her ass as Kurt stood next to her and cheered for Kazan.

The Oscars are not all about politics, but there is heavy influence.
