WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans on Wednesday assailed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's request for access to an Air Force transport plane as an extravagance, though former Speaker Dennis Hastert flew in a military jet as well.

Republicans are taking issue with the size of the plane Pelosi has requested. Pelosi had asked for access to a C-32 plane, a military version of the Boeing 757-200.

A Defense Department spokesman said Wednesday that the Pentagon informed Pelosi's staff that she would be provided with a plane but that its size would be based on availability.AP (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/P/PELOSI_PLANE?SITE=7219&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2007-02-07-20-13-12)

Since when does ANY member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, merit a military plane, unless he's flying into a military base or war zone?

She needs it for her staff that keeps her hair up. Plus, she needs the extra room for the botox needles and Clairol.

Bela Pelosi is an important woman. She expects perks commensurate with her status. Though richer'n Croesus, it's only right that you and I, peons that we be, pay for her perks.

After 9/11 Speaker Dennis Hastert would regularly fly in a military plane. The 'logic' is because speaker of the house is in line to be president s/he should have that security.

The quoted news report is misleading... I origianlly posted the first announcement of her "demand" and what was revealed in that report which this one conveniently leaves out is that she is demanding access to military aricraft, on demand, for not only herself (as Speaker of the House and 3rd in Line to the Presidency), but for her staff, ALL OTHER California lawmakers, and HER FAMILY MEMBERS...

This is the House leadership that is going to stamp out corruption and unethical behavior...

As I understand it the Speaker of the House is provided a military aircraft to go back and forth from her home district and Washington. That was done for the last Speaker of the House as well.

The problem with this Pelosi dolt is that she wants a bigger plane(747?) to accomodate an entourage that includes friends and family. That is a flat NO-NO by the Military Regulations pertaining to all Government employees as well as the Speaker of the House.

No! No! MSGT. No engine. Let her jump from the highest building/hill/rock, land, then walk to the next "point of departure".

And, for $300,000 a trip, she could buy a fleet of them for her deciples.

Pentagon limits Pelosi jet size (http://washtimes.com/national/20070208-121345-5680r.htm)

The Department of Defense yesterday sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that puts limits on the size of the plane she may use to travel across the country and restricts the guests she can bring, The Washington Times has learned.

A congressional source who read the letter signed by Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Wilkie said it essentially limits her to the commuter plane used by former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, which requires refueling to travel from Washington to Mrs. Pelosi's San Francisco district. A second source, in the Bush administration, confirmed the contents of the letter.

The Washington Times first reported last week that Mrs. Pelosi's staff was pressing the Department of Defense for an Air Force aircraft large enough to fly nonstop to San Francisco. She also has pressed to be able to include other members of the California congressional delegation, her family members and her staff on the plane.

She, being a rich, elitist liberal, obviously doesn't want to have to touch down among the hicks in flyover country to refuel.

Alas, the Bush White House is DEFENDING its new best friends, the Democrats and Pelosi, over this. When does Bush stop putting an R after his name and install a D instead? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,250848,00.html

The media continues to pound a false Washington Times report (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/07/pelosi-smear/) accusing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) of wasting government resources by “demanding permanent access to a large military jet for herself, her staff, other Members and supporters.”

In fact, Pelosi’s office has stated repeatedly, from the beginning, that “it is up to the Air Force to decide (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/07/pelosi-smear/) what type and size of plane will be required,” and that she “will not use the plane for political travel (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/07/pelosi-smear/).”

Conservatives have tried to bolster their attack by claiming that former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) only used his military aircraft for official business. The Washington Times quoted an unnamed “former Hastert aide” saying Hastert “did not use military planes for political trips (http://mediamatters.org/items/200702070004) or regularly transport his family.” But Chicago Sun-Times reporter Lynne Sweet says that isn’t true (http://thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/Comment/LynnSweet/020807.html):

. . .

Pelosi said today she will fly commercial (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17035721/) rather than use the aircraft offered by the Pentagon, which cannot reach her home district in California without stopping to refuel.More at Think Progress (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/02/08/hastert-flight/)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House Sergeant at Arms said Thursday he was the one who requested a larger military aircraft to transport House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to her San Francisco district non-stop, not the California Democrat herself as some GOP critics have alleged.

"The fact that Speaker Pelosi lives in California compelled me to request an aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights for security purposes, unless such an aircraft is unavailable. This will ensure communications capabilities and also enhance security," House Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood said in a statement. "I made the recommendation to use military aircraft based upon the need to provide necessary levels of security for ranking national leaders, such as the Speaker."

Some Republicans have taken issue with the size of the plane required to fly Pelosi to California without stopping to refuel. The No. 3 House Republican, Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida, said Pelosi's desire for a large transport plane is "an extravagance of power that the taxpayers won't swallow."

"I regret that an issue that is exclusively considered and decided in a security context has evolved into a political issue," Livingood added.

Earlier Thursday, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow defended Pelosi, telling reporters, "This is a silly story, and I think it's been unfair to the Speaker."CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politicalticker/index.html)

So, when is Congress going to not stop funding for the war, but for the Pelosi?

Next thing, botox queen is going to ask for 'a surge' in her makeup & hair department. 12,000 more gay men to interior decorate her new office just like the Tet Offensive.
