If not now, when? If not him, who? Those are the questions African Americans must ask themselves as Sen. Barack Obama starts his historic run as one of the front-runners in the 2008 presidential race.
But on Saturday, African Americans -- expected to make up a large core -- made a poor showing among the estimated 17,000 people who braved the frigid temperatures to stand with Obama.
If these voters fail to grasp the big picture, that Obama unveiled what he called the "unfinished business of perfecting ... and building America," they would have been hoodwinked by an often-disappointing black leadership.
Henry Marshall, a Hyde Park resident who drove to Springfield with his wife, said he could count the number of blacks in the throng on his hand.
