The Associated Press Ignores Paris Hilton News in Weeklong Experiment

Thursday, March 01, 2007

NEW YORK — So you may have heard: Paris Hilton was ticketed the other day for driving with a suspended license.

Not huge news, even by celebrity-gossip standards. Here at The Associated Press, we put out an initial item of some 300 words. But it actually meant more to us than that.

It meant the end of our experimental blackout on news about Paris Hilton.

It was only meant to be a weeklong ban — not the boldest of journalistic initiatives, and one, we realized, that might seem hypocritical once it ended. And it wasn't based on a view of what the public should be focusing on — the war in Iraq, for example, or the upcoming election of the next leader of the free world, as opposed to the doings of a partygoing celebrity heiress/reality TV star most famous for a grainy sex video.

No, editors just wanted to see what would happen if we didn't cover this media phenomenon, this creature of the Internet gossip age, for a full week. After that, we'd take it day by day. Would anyone care? Would anyone notice? And would that tell us something interesting?

It turned out that people noticed plenty — but not in the way that might have been expected. None of the tens of thousands of media outlets that depend on AP called in asking for a Paris Hilton story. No one felt a newsworthy event had been ignored. (To be fair, nothing too out-of-the-ordinary happened in the Hilton universe.)......http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,255919,00.html

Not nearly long enough.

Or widespread enough. And it didn't include C. Shitcan and other pests. Let's do it right and establish a total media ban on any mention of Hilton, Sheehan, A-N Smith, Spears, Lohan et al, for eternity.

After all the 'close acquaintences' that have been in and out of that libia, I imagin it looks like the Grand Canyon now. I would rather see recent pictures of LYBIA.

I wonder how many people understand how the Associated Press actually works?

Think about it: they just publically admitted that an extremely tiny handful of people (whose names I still don't know) at the AP's helm can not only inject or spin a particular issue any way they like, but they can actually order a comprehensive blackout on an entire subject - at their merest whim.

And these same people constantly tell us that Rupert Murdock's 2.5% control of the American news media is blotting out this country's access to "free press."

Yeah, but how did she get into the story about the Democrats in Vegas? What happens there is supposed to stay there, no?
