Pro-life, anti-busing liberal. They're probably celebrating at DU.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Former U.S. Sen. Thomas Eagleton, who resigned as a vice presidential nominee in 1972 after it was revealed he had been hospitalized for depression, died Sunday, according to the office of Sen. Claire McCaskill (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/politics/news/ap/ap_on_re_us/obit_eagleton/22144822/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Claire%20McCaskill%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw), bio (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/capadv/bio/ap/ap_on_re_us/obit_eagleton/22144822/SIG=119mq5oka/*http://yahoo.capwiz.com/y/bio/?id=31697), voting record (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/capadv/vote/ap/ap_on_re_us/obit_eagleton/22144822/SIG=11i1aoo3s/*http://yahoo.capwiz.com/y/bio/keyvotes/?id=31697)).

The cause of death was not disclosed. Eagleton, 77, had suffered from a variety of illnesses and ailments in recent years.

"Today Missouri has a hole in its heart," McCaskill said in a statement. "Tom Eagleton managed to be a statesman, an intellectual and a man of the people all at the same time."

They might want to add in the obit, Tom Eagleton was there when the Politics of Personal Destruction put down roots. Eagleton was the first victim.

EDIT: In the "modern era." Yes, I know our forebearers make today's politics of personal destruction look like a tea party.

Oh, most certainly. Especially, if he was pro-life.

Eagleton was a good man. He got ripped up in politics, as so many do.

McGovern's handling of Eagleton's dismissal from the ticket was very poorly handled (as was just about every other aspect of the campaign). At least that made sure George McG. never had a chance against Nixon.
