White House Press Secretary Says Growth On Abdomen Is Cancerous
(CBS/AP) White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told the White House Tuesday that a growth discovered in his lower abdomen is cancerous. Snow reported that the cancer has spread to the liver, according to deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino.
He is consulting with doctors on chemotherapy, Perino said, adding that Snow spoke with the president. Perino said Snow is feeling "pretty good."
Perino said Snow told her, "I'm gonna beat it again."
Snow underwent surgery Monday to remove a small growth in his lower abdomen, a procedure he said last Friday was being done "out of an aggressive sense of caution" because he had colon cancer two years ago.

I can't believe the prognosis is too good.

A leading oncologist was quoted on our local radio station as saying that there have been so many improvements in treating liver cancer in the past 5 years that Tony Snow has a good chance of beating it.

How in the heck does it get to stage 4 when you have had previous bouts. I would think that the Doc's would keep a constant check on it. I would expect if from someone who didn't know they had it until it was stage 4, but not a surviving patient...This doesn't make sense!

Stage 4 refers to a late stage cancer and it's the cell type, NOT it's size. Apparently the colon cancer had been surgically removed but a few cells survived the followup chemo a couple of years ago. They migrated to the bloodstream and a small finger tip size tumor grew in the liver. At this point it's cell type very malignant and other microscopic cells are most likely lodged in other organs - stage four is almost always fatal if it gets to the liver or brain.
Of course, he may fend it off for many more years - let us hope so.

Stage 4 is treatable, not cureable. This means that the tumors have spread to other parts of the body, usually the organs or bones or both. This is not an indicator of the size of tumors--they can be small or large, but the lymph nodes are also affected.
It is possible that he could live a while with the cancer in his body as long as it does not grow or if it gets smaller (remission). He will never be cancer free.

Let's hope he (and Mrs. Edwards, for that matter) are able to live for many more years.
