Judge Says Illinois Man Can't Change Name to Peyton Manning

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

DECATUR, Ill. — A judge in Macon County said Scott Wiese of Forsyth can't change his name to Peyton Manning.

The 26-year-old man told friends that if his beloved team (Da Bears) didn't win the Super Bowl, he'd become Peyton Manning....

...But Macon County Circuit Judge Katherine McCarthy said the name change is too confusing and risks infringing the privacy of the football player.....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,261924,00.html

Strangely enough, that may be a victory for the plaintiff, even though it's officially a loss.

So what about the football player who changed HIS name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?

Still doesn't rank as weird as all those parents who named their babies ESPN, :smirky: .

ESPN.com - GEN - ESPN is all the rage ... as a baby name? (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=1829996)

The former NFL football player's first name (Karim) is spelled differently, but is pronounced the same as the L.A. Laker icon.

Wasn't he given that name when he converted to Islam? Or did he choose it?

He was a basketball player. You missed the point. A football player did indeed change his name to that, although as Best noted, the spelling was slightly different. I remember when I first heard his name on TV during a football game. I thought old Kareem had been reincarnated as a football player. But as far as I know, Kareem ain't dead, so then I thought it might be Kareem junior.

I've heard of parents naming their kid "Boy" because that was written on the birth certificate at the hospital right after he was born and the parents decided that was the name he'd been given. Of course, that may be an urban legend. Or a case of bad drugs.

I've also heard of (obviously) non-Irish parents naming their kid Sean because they liked how the name looked, but out of ignorance pronouncing it "Seen."

He spelled his first name Karim but he was a running back for the Miami Dolphins for awhile.

I wonder what would happen if I changed my name to Paris Hilton. (Yes, Paris can be a guy's name; in fact, Paris the Heiress recently had a boyfriend named Paris. I think they broke up when she forgot his name. )

If I changed my name to Paris Hilton, my IQ would drop precipitously (and, of course, I would no longer know what precipitously means, nor would I care about my ignorance--and I wouldn't know what ignorance means either). I would smoke pot and appear in grainy sex videos.

What a life I would have!

:D
