Thompson and Gore::By Rich Galen (http://www.townhall.com/columnists/column.aspx?UrlTitle=thompson_and_gore&ns=RichGalen&dt=03/28/2007&page=full&comments=true)

FULL DISCLOSURE ALERT: The Lad is Deputy Campaign Manager for John McCain. I, therefore, have a rooting interest in the McCain campaign staying in business for as long as possible. Use that as a filter through which read the following; a brief chronology:

On March 11, former Senator and current actor Fred Thompson told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, upon being asked if he were "considering running for President in 2008:"

"I'm giving some thought to it. Going to leave the door open."

This past Friday night the Mullings Director of Standards & Practices and I were having dinner at our favorite restaurant, Landini's, in Old Town when it came to our attention that former Senator Fred Thompson was on premises and was sitting with Republican über-media-maven Alex Castellanos.

What's the big deal? How about this: CBS News characterized Castellanos as "a strategist for Mitt Romney."

Whoa! Check, please!

USA Today/Gallup (*snicker*) poll showed that Thompson "announcing" that "I'm leaving the door open" got him 12 points dropping Rudy from 44 to 31.

If Fred DOES throw his hat in the ring, I think the rest of the field could "just hang it up"...for one reason, and one reason only. Fred Thompson appeals to the conservative BASE as no other candidate (announced or unannounced) can or will.

NO Republican candidate will win the General Election in Nov '08 without the support of the BASE of the Republican Party.

Now then, on to "stupid is as stupid does"...for the life of me, I cannot fathom Gore being viewed as 'favorable' amongst Democrats by a full 10 points over Hillary. As much as I despise the woman, there's just something not right about that...but, it may get REALLY entertaining if he throws in.

My assessment...Thompson is the ONLY candidate presently that has a chance of beating either one of 'em...only because conservatives are sick of voting AGAINST the Democrat/for the lesser of 2 evils. We want someone FOR whom we can vote, without feeling like we're compromising our principles (yet, AGAIN).

Just my 2˘...

Your 2 cents is worth a dime !

Thompson is a uniting candidate ...

Very few vocal people are saying they'd "hold their nose and vote" if Fred were the choice ...

a third party "Conservative" would have no chance of splitting votes away from Fred ...

Talking about candidates A,B,C ... leads to rather spirited "conversation" , but , for the most part , Fred gets thumbs up and the spirited conversation turns to the VP spot ...

Thompson is what all the other candidates (on both sides) crave to be... He is the perosnlaity who the vast numbers of party core base voters are desperately looking for... WHEN he does announce his candidacy, I predict that he will blow all the other candidates out of the water - We'll see several withdrawals from the race on the Pub side immediately...

The Dems will go into total denial, and many may in fact lose grip on reality, when faced with a Pub candidate who will bring back the Reagan avalanche...

I believe, despite the best efforts of the Dems, the Whitehouse is, right now, today, Fred Thompson's for the taking... Its his choice...
