From television revealing that spaghetti grows on trees to advertisements for the left-handed burger, the tradition of April Fool's Day stories in the media has a weird and wonderful history.

Here are 10 of the top April Fool's Day pranks ever pulled off, as judged by the San Diego-based Museum of Hoaxes for their notoriety, absurdity, and number of people duped.

-- In 1957, a BBC television show announced that thanks to a mild winter and the virtual elimination of the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. Footage of Swiss farmers pulling strands of spaghetti from trees prompted a barrage of calls from people wanting to know how to grow their own spaghetti at home.

-- In 1985, Sports Illustrated magazine published a story that a rookie baseball pitcher who could reportedly throw a ball at 270 kilometers per hour (168 miles per hour) was set to join the New York Mets. Finch was said to have mastered his skill -- pitching significantly faster than anyone else has ever managed -- in a Tibetan monastery. Mets fans' celebrations were short-lived.Ten of the best April Fool's Day hoaxes: US museum (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=070329054603.f2i8t0mu&show_article=1&catnum=-1)

Noted British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on the radio in 1976 that at 9:47 am, a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event, in which Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, would cause a gravitational alignment that would reduce the Earth's gravity. Moore told listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment of the planetary alignment, they would experience a floating sensation. Hundreds of people (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=%22Hundreds+of+people%22&sid=breitbart.com) called in to report feeling the sensation.I wonder if Moore is related to the miserable failure (http://www.michaelmoore.com) (talking about a bad joke!).

:moo: So far, my chef d'œuvre April Fool's joke was one I pulled in college. My job was checking IDs at the dormitory cafeteria at breakfast, & at the end of the meal, put up a menu board for the next meal. I couldn't resist...

Coq au Vin
Venison
Caviar
Bouillabaisse
Champagne
April Fool's

:moo: Even though I made it obvious with the last line, many students didn't get past "venison", & went racing toward the serving line. At first, the servers were perplexed by the requests for venison, but after they realized the source of the inquiries, responded to them with a loud "APRIL FOOL'S". The joke went over so well, the menu board was left intact for supper, as well.

In 1987, my husband's unit in Fort Hood, TX, got the bright idea to call a practice alert at 0430. It ends up about 2/3 of the company didn't show up because they thought it was an April Fool's joke. Thankfully my husband was getting ready to go with me to Ft. Polk, LA on a stateside swap and got to walk right past that debaucle.

"We in Hollywood need to support our own," Spielberg said, to the surprise of assembled reporters. "Fred's screen resume is one anyone could be proud of.
