Planting trees in snowy areas may worsen global warming as their canopies absorb sunlight which would otherwise be reflected by the snow, a study says.

The report in US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says the pine forests of Europe, Siberia and Canada may contribute to warming.

Only tropical forests effectively cool the earth by absorbing carbon dioxide and creating clouds, the report says.

Scientists have long argued that planting and preserving forests helps reduce global warming because trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it to oxygen.

"Our new study shows that only tropical rainforests are strongly beneficial in helping slow down global warming...In cooler areas of the earth, tree cover helps store sunlight reflected by snow on the ground and this "cancels or exceeds" the net cooling effect, Mr Bala told the AFP news agency. Hold de bus!!! This sounds dangerously close to a natural resource of the earth causing Global Warming... And that sounds dangerously close to the idea that Global Warming is a naturally occurring cycle...:ooo:

Common sense for anyone who understands forests. Pine trees handle the cold really well, so in cooler times they out perform deciduous trees. As things warm up, the deciduous trees take the lead. With D's shedding their leaves every fall, they absorb less heat, cooling things down and giving the pines an advantage. D's also cool the summer air more by evaporative cooling, something pines don't do much of (they are far better at retaining moisture). As the pines get thicker, they absorb winter warmth and warm things up giving Ds the advantage. It's a nice neat cycle that allows the forest to go through self-regenerating cycles (kind of like natural crop rotation over centuries). Very well DESIGNED.

Before he died in 1975, Euell Gibbons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euell_Gibbons) used to eat the things. Do you remember the Post Grape-Nuts commercials?
