BRISBANE, Australia — A 40-foot catamaran found drifting off Australia's Great Barrier Reef had its sails up, engines running and food on the table, but no crew, officials said Friday after launching a massive search for the missing men.

A coastal patrol aircraft spotted the vessel Kaz II on Wednesday but rescue workers only reached the boat early Friday, confirming there was no one aboard.

Officials said they were puzzled by what they found.

"They got on board and said the engine was running, the computers were running, there was a laptop set up on the table which was running, the radio was working ... and there was food and utensils set on the table ready to eat, but no sign of the crew," said Jon Hall, a spokesman for Queensland state's Emergency Management office.

"It was a bit strange," he said.

The vessel's emergency beacon and three life jackets were still on board, along with a dinghy.

The catamaran's sails were up, but the headsail was "shredded," according to Warwick Bracken of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority......http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,267345,00.html

drug smuggling pirates

Pirates, as in kill / butcher / rape everyone onboard, steal whatever's valuable, and leave. No witnesses.

Muslims, perchance?

Just tow it to my dock. I'll take a free boat!

Something happened, but I'm holding off on "Pirates" [Pittsburg or otherwise]. Wouldn't Pirates have taken the boat?

I would think floating bodies and no boat would be what you'd find if it was Pirates.

Doubt it was pirates or the laptop would be gone. Im a bit perplexed as to why the main sail is up but the engines were running. I would like to see the sail plans to find out how many were on board if it were 1 or 2 a rogue wave might have knocked them overboard. It could have been a professional hit if its clean with nothing stolen.
Lastly it might have been a giant squid or sea monster that pulled them overboard but who knows.

I believe there were thee men aboard, two in their 60s and the other in his mid 50s.

Why are they overlooking the blatantly obvious? The men were abducted by grays and taken to the mother ship for unspeakable sexual experiments involving vacuum pumps, lawn chairs, peacock feathers and a Paris Hilton blowup doll.

As I suspected the Ausies now think the men were foolish enough to be on deck in hi seas without a life line and got washed overboard. Alot of older sailer's get lulled into thinking they are invincible and go on deck in rough seas without hitching up. 1 big wave and your in the drink, if you all go over no ones there to get your butt back on board.

That happened to me once in the South Seas about 500 miles wsw of Tahiti. Big ole wave washed me clean off and into the drink. I's a strong swimmer, though, and in good shape, and it took about three days before I died.
