Baltimore County public school officials have said that adding Muslim holidays to the school calendars is unlawful and "irresponsible," marking another setback in attempts across the region to add the holidays.

Muslim supporters wanted schools to close for Eid al-Adha, which marks the end of the yearly pilgrimage to Mecca, and Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

A few dozen members of the county's chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee asked for the change at a school board meeting Tuesday night.

School officials, however, stood firm by a state law that disallows public schools from endorsing any religion, saying the school calendar can include scheduled closures only for holidays that cause low attendance rates countywide.

What's the big deal anyway? I used to get an occasional Worldwide Church Of God student who had to be allowed a certain set of holidays without penalty regarding makeup. If the Mooselems want a few extra days off to bash their heads on an embroidered carpet and stick their asses up in the air, who am I to complain?

Shoot, as a Spanish teacher, I'd welcome them! Islam should be illegal to begin with, even if we have to amend the Constitution to make it clear (though I believe that Islam doesn't qualify as a religion for Constitutional purposes).

Any muslim naturalized as a US citizen is committing a fraud by taking the oath of naturalization while remaining muslim and should be jailed, fined, then deported.

Personally, I can't wait for the day when the gloves come off. I've got quite a few scores to settle with these barbarians.
