Pols barking for pooch crackdown

Bay State dogs may soon end up on a shorter leash if state and local legislators get their way. From lap dogs to pit bulls, none of the state’s pooches will escape the latest round of canine crackdowns.
“You can’t allow people to be afraid all the time,” said Avril T. Elkort, vice chairwoman of the Canton Board of Selectmen, where a new ordinance limits residents to one pit bull per household. “It was a public safety issue.”
Canton animal control officer Ellen Barnett objected to the new regulation. “The problem I had with it is that it was too breed specific,” Barnett said, echoing the concerns of many owners and advocates.
Meanwhile, state Rep. Martin Walsh is howling mad about dogs running wild inside moving cars and is considering filing legislation requiring drivers to buckle up their canines.....http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=198209

Um, ever had a St. Bernard launched at you at 60 MPH?
How about a head over bloody heels German Shepard hit you while you're walking down the sidewalk and the dog flies out of the bed of a pickup to flatten you?
What if you're in the front seat buckled in and the Jack Russell terrier asleep in the rear window hits you in the back of the head at 75 MPH?
Sucks to be the dog...
...and the human point of their impact.
I don't even want to get into how badly drivers are already driving distracted.

Nope. Never had any of that happen. Has it ever happened?

“If you want to own a pit bull, which in my estimation can be the same as owning a weapon, the owner and the dog should receive training,”
Huh? Please. My mother owns both a gun and a Pit Bull mix and I can assure you - the 9mm is a lot more menacing than the dog. Penny is the biggest doof on the face of the earth. Pit Bulls are not inherently mean. They are a physically strong breed, but not vicious. Any dog can be made into a vicious killer, but that has nothing to do with the breed and everything to do with ignorant owners. My sister is a veterinary technician and has treated dogs from all breeds. She has clipped the nails of Rottweilers and administered shots to Pit Bulls. The worst injury she has ever received from a dog came from a thirteen year old Chihuahua that apparently didn't like being picked up.

The only thing I think needs looking into is the little ones the drivers hold on their laps while driving. I don't know if this has ever caused an accident, but the potential is there if ever the driver needs to turn abruptly.
But, I don't think we need legislation to correct this, just some drivers education.

In Massholechusetts, the legislators deviate from catering to queers only when it involves other equally outrageous legislation. Boston needs a little nuclear urban renewal.

Nope....Never had any of that happen. Are there any real stats to indicate that this legislation is really needed or is this just another "feel good" piece of crap being foisted upon the citizens at the urging of another special interest group of weenies?
