Briton Misdiagnosed With Terminal Cancer Sues After Spending Life Savings
Monday, May 07, 2007
LONDON — A man who spent his life savings after being told he had months to live is seeking compensation after doctors in Britain conceded they had got the diagnosis wrong.
John Brandrick, 62, was told two years ago that he had terminal pancreatic cancer. He decided to spend his remaining time in style, quitting his job and spending his savings on hotels, restaurants and holidays.
A year later, doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in southwest England revised their diagnosis: Brandrick was suffering from pancreatitis, a nonfatal ailment.
"My life has been turned upside down by this," Brandrick said. "I was told certainly, by the doctor, that I had cancer, and from that day I lived life in full......http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270523,00.html

I think that's why there's something called a "second opinion."
If you have a heart attack, and are rushed to emergency surgery, and the doctor accidentally operates on your spleen - ok, that's not your fault.
But when you have SIX MONTHS to work with, don't you think that maybe - just maybe - you could have taken a day off from pondering eternity and squandering your fortune to go try out a different hospital?

But that would have meant less money for the "I am going to live it up before I die" fund.

All in all, it's his fault he spent his money away.

While a miraculous cure can't be ruled out, regular churchgoers will be hard-pressed to explain why the Almighty would squander His resources on such a vacuous individual. And once again we must ponder that the ways of the Lord are indeed mysterious.

I remember an episode of "The Dukes of Hazzard" that was something like that. Boss Hogg, the crooked County Commissioner, was told by his doctor that he had only two weeks to live. Realizing that he was headed for hell, he started to mend his ways, and repay back all the people he had cheated, including his former best friend, Jesse Duke. However, by the end of the show, the doctor had called to tell Boss there had been a mix-up in the test results, and he wasn't going to die after all. Naturally, Boss went back to being his crooked self.
I think I once used the story for a Sunday-school lesson.

This reminds me of my insurance policy. If I get two Drs. opinions that I'm going to die within the next year, I can get my insurance money now. If I get better, I keep the money. My only problem is that my Dr. has too much integrity...

Does anyone know how the British medical system works? Maybe he thought he would be dead before he could get an appointment for a second opinion? Just a thought.

Does anyone know how the British medical system works? It's a <del>socialized medicine</del> single-payer system that's the envy of the world, as we all know.

Does anyone know how the British medical system works? Maybe he thought he would be dead before he could get an appointment for a second opinion? Just a thought. They have private hospitals in England, and most British folks save part of their monthly income just so they can take advantage of them when the socialized system doesn't work well. Such savings are a very common practice, since the socialized system often does not work well. The British are pretty disciplined savers, particularly for private medical care and for holidays (vacations). This guy could have gotten a second opinion, even if he had to pay a little of that fortune to get it. All of my British neighbors over there were envious that we had quality free (and available) medical care from the military, without having to save part of our income for it.
My oldest son, having been born in England, had a National Health Care card, but we were never crazy enough to try to use it.
