Operating system? (I'm betting XP) And, perchance are you viewing your desktop as a web page? Turning that off may help. You can also change security settings in IE (assuming you are using that) to find out exactly what is doing it (java, activex, etc.), and restrict it or turn it off. Whatever the case may be, it appears you have lax security settings that could cause a whole lot more problems than just a desktop icon if not fixed.

As Rhino said, check your security settings under IE. Make it at least Medium, preferrable a little higher. I would also suggest DLing and running AdAware to get rid of some of that spyware. Also, I would suggest DLing a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com) or Black Ice Defender.
I am assuming you are on a dialup account and you are not running a router.

no cable modem, I looked around but can't remember where to modify the "view as a webpage"? (XP, have zone alarm, medium security on IE)

Under XP, it does not really have that option like it does under Windows 9.x.
The best thing to do is to go to Control Panel/Folder Options and under the General tab click 'Restore Defaults' and then under the View tab, click 'Reset All Folders'. That should clear it up.
If not, run AdAware. There might be some spyware floating around your system.
