Wildfire Triggers Evacuations in Los Angeles; More High Temperatures Expected
Wednesday, May 09, 2007
LOS ANGELES — Firefighters were taking advantage of cooler temperatures and dying winds early Wednesday as they sought to corral a fierce wildfire in the brush-covered hills behind the Griffith Observatory.
The 600-acre blaze in sprawling Griffith Park was 40 percent contained at daybreak, but with temperatures expected to soar into the 90s and humidity levels forecast to drop back into single digits, firefighters wouldn't estimate when full containment was expected.
"It's not moving too quick right now," said fire Capt. Carlos Calvillo, adding that could all change when the weather heats up.
The blaze started around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, closing several of the park's major attractions including the Observatory and Greek Theater, and evacuating nearby homes. Animals at the Los Angeles Zoo were moved indoors.
Authorities said some of the 300 evacuated residents would be allowed to return to their homes Wednesday......http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270815,00.html
