It surely wasn't what CBS dreamed about when Katie Couric was hired: the "CBS Evening News" last week recorded its smallest audience since 1987, and probably many years before that.

"World News" averaged 8.1 million viewers last week (5.7 rating, 12 share). NBC's "Nightly News" had 7.5 million viewers, its fourth-lowest figure since at least 1987 (5.3, 12), and CBS had a 4.3 rating and 9 share.
So the other two alphabet networks aren't picking up any of the slack - and this is during sweeps week.
The total of the Big Three is now under 20 million viewers. This is an important figure to keep track of. This is where the rubber meets the road in liberal journalism. Sure the New York Times is "influential" among the press - but its circulation is around a half million and dropping. CNN started out big in the cable wars, but it has unequivocally lost to Fox. MSNBC is, for all practical purposes, a cable access channel in terms of its market share.
The average (median) age of alphabet nightly news viewers passed 60 years old some time ago. If nothing else, the actuarial tables will eventually be the downfall of the liberal media. But there are a lot of other factors at work as well.
There are way too many choices out there today for these guys to keep trading viewers the way they did in 1970. Anything that shakes these geriatrics up also shakes them LOOSE. Whether that's a female anchor, simply a new male anchor -- or every time a network news program is forced to more overtly admit that they favor the Democrats. They are constantly losing ground.
Individual election battles are going to be won and lost here and there. But in the long term fight for hearts and minds, we are winning the war - one liberal media-watching drone at a time.

The alphabet media are losing viewers to -- disinterest. They used their mikes all these years to indoctrinate the public. The public as a whole might never have caught on, but it did get bored always hearing the same song, over and over and over and over and over, year after year after year after year after year.
Liberals want a dumbed down public. Now they got it, and that same public is killing their mouthpiece liberal media.

The public is voting with their feet, so to speak.

If Katie Couric was reading the news and no one was watching, would she still be making noise?
