3 Contestants to Vie for Kidney of Terminally Ill Patient on Criticized Dutch Reality TV Show

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — A Dutch reality show that claims to be trying to draw attention to a shortage of organ donors said Tuesday it would go ahead with a program in which a terminally ill woman will choose a contestant to receive one of her kidneys.

The program, "Big Donor Show," has been attacked as unethical and tasteless. At least one member of the Dutch parliament plans to ask the government to block Friday's broadcast.

"We know that this program is super controversial and some people will think it's tasteless, but we think the reality is even more shocking and tasteless: waiting for an organ is just like playing the lottery," Laurens Drillich, chairman of the BNN network, said in a statement.

She said waiting lists in the Netherlands are more than four years long and 200 patients die annually for lack of a donor.

The network identified the donor as "Lisa," a 37-year-old woman with an inoperable brain tumor. During the show, she will hear interviews with the three candidates, their families and friends before choosing who will get her kidney.....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,276043,00.html

And I thought our television was sick.

I agree its unethical and sick to let tv viewers decide on who stays alive and who dies.

But here is some background and motives for making this uh show.

This show is made by BNN - Barts News Network.
Bart de Graaff - founder of BNN, died from kidney failure aged 35 after spending years on a transplant waiting list.

"The chance for a kidney for the contestants is 33%," said the station's current chairman, Laurens Drillich. "This is much higher than that for people on a waiting list. We think that is disastrous, so we are acting in a shocking way to bring attention to this problem."

They sure succeeded so far, they wanted national attention and now its world news!

Like I said, I dont agree but fact remains that the reality is much sicker.

I've often wondered what the long pole is in this tent. Is it just that there aren't enough organ donors?

Exactly! Are you, or anyone else a organ donor?
I must confess, I've never really put much thought into being a organ donor.

Anyone here that explicitly doesnt wants to be a donor? Just wondering what reasons there could be to not donate your organs.

Yes, I'm a donor. Have been for many years. Of course, the way I'm going, I'm not so sure I'll have anything donatable.

Are you, or anyone else a organ donor? They can have whatever I've got left - I'd double-check that liver, by the way - but I just want them to be good and sure I'm dead. And I don't want the final verdict coming from any hospital ethics board, either.

I won't donate anything to anyone outside of my family. Sounds mean, I can't really explain it, but I just can't trust a hospital board to make a decision, god forbid I ever end up on life support and don't seem to make a recovery, a miracle could always occur, and if it does, I need my organs.

The show seems completely tasteless, one person lives where the other 2 get a death sentence. Seems more ruthless than the Roman colosseum.

Its a show - in reality all three would get a death sentence.

Ah, it seems the international media has catch up on new developments ;-)

No fear. The Chinese still have excess people and that means excess organs to sell. For that matter, Kim Jong Il could sell his people's organs and buy hizself a fleet of Lexi.

You do know this is a joke don't you?

The whole thing was to "raise awareness" of organ donor issue. The're not actually going to this.
