Giant 80-Pound Lizard Hunted in Florida

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

CASSELBERRY, Fla. — Police say they're sure they shot a four-foot-long, 80-pound monitor lizard that had been lurking here for months. Neighbors, though, want to see a carcass before letting their children and pets back outdoors.

The lizard didn't bite anyone, but police officers were authorized to kill it because of the potential danger it posed to small children and animals.

An officer shot the reptile twice Sunday but wasn't close enough to catch it before the animal scampered into a retention pond.....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,276083,00.html

Saw this on the news. With all the gators on the prowl around the myriad of retention ponds in sunny Florida...this is a comic relief.

If they can bag a gator, they could bag this beast...bring him to a zoo. He sounds like a trophy lizard...and a good reason to keep your pets on a leash by crackey.

Maybe they should introduce that 1000+ pound hog to this primordial beast.

Wonder what kind of monitor s/he is?

My son has a Savannah monitor; has had him for at least two years now. He is almost 3-1/2 feet long. He swims in our bathtub. As long as he's fed regularly (and he is), he's very docile. Of course, we ALL realize he is a wild animal, so we respect him and his nature as a wild beast. We do not take chances with him around small children, other pets, or let him run loose.

Whoever dumped this animal should be prosecuted (if they could ever be caught and tried). People who get these exotic pets without understanding the care, upkeep, and enormous responsibility they are, deserve to be punished when they do something like this (dump them).
