Germany has barred the makers of a movie about a plot to kill Adolf Hitler from filming at German military sites because its star Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, the Defense Ministry said on Monday.

Cruise, also one of the film's producers, is a member of the Church of Scientology which the German government does not recognize as a church. Berlin says it masquerades as a religion to make money, a charge Scientology leaders reject.

The U.S. actor has been cast as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, leader of the unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the Nazi dictator in July 1944 with a bomb hidden in a briefcase.

'Sides, Cruise is too pretty to play von Stauffenberg, who was indeed an extraordinarily handsome man but much more virile than the girlie Cruise.

I hope they get Hitler right for a change. Years ago they made a series of Herman Wouk's Winds of War, and made Hitler out to be a lisping, hysterical idiot. Unfortunately for the world of his era, Hitler was a most able man. Wouk knew this and said as much thru the words of one of his characters in the book, but he obviously didn't get to select the players for the series. Not only was Hitler badly cast, but the lead guy -- Pug Henry -- was played awfully by Robt Mitchum. I like Mitchum, but he was woefully miscast in that one.
