It is already the world's biggest country, spanning 11 time zones and stretching from Europe to the far east. But yesterday Russia signalled its intention to get even bigger by announcing an audacious plan to annex a vast 460,000 square mile chunk of the frozen and ice-encrusted Arctic.

According to Russian scientists, there is new evidence backing Russia's claim that its northern Arctic region is directly linked to the North Pole via an underwater shelf. ...

Russia's Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper celebrated the discovery by printing a large map of the North Pole. It showed the new "addition" to Russia - the size of France, Germany and Italy combined - under a white, blue and red Russian flag.

You do realize that the reason the north pole/arctic ocean are being faught over is becuase there is a ton of oil there?

I predict there will be released to the world a new formula for fuel, and there is not a damned thing we're going to need fossil fuel for after that. There's not a damned thing the oil companies will be able to do about it either. A brand new world could be dawning, where sanity takes over.

Now I've tried, I really have, but for some reason I just can't seem to get too worked up about this.

Maybe because it looks obvious that this is only a ploy by Putin to get the U.S. to go alone with the new UN Maritime law..

Or maybe it's because of the logistics involved.. I'm well aware that there is oil under the North Pole, and all sorts of other goodies.. but consider that the COST of getting that oil out of there is going to basically guarantee that it'll be one of the very Last places on Earth that will ever be tapped. I'm guessing that oil would have to cost 200 bucks a barrel or More in order to make it cost-effective to put rigs up there. And by then we'll have either come up with alternate fuels or it just wont matter.

Anyways, the part that really struck me was that the article also mentions that Putin is relying on 'global warming' to make it easier to get that oil out..
