Ex-Alabama Governor Don Siegelman, HealthSouth CEO Get 7 Years in Prison
Thursday, June 28, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy got nearly seven years Thursday in a bribery and corruption case that the judge said damaged public trust in state government.

Supporters of both men had testified at their sentencing hearing, describing the positive impact they have had in Alabama during their careers, as attorneys pleaded with U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller to show mercy.

"While it is true the good far exceeds the bad, I must impose a fair punishment to reassure all that come before this court that justice is blind," Fuller said in sentencing Siegelman.

Both men were immediately taken into custody after the judge denied defense requests to let them remain free while they appeal.

The two once-prominent figures in politics and business were escorted out of the courtroom by U.S. marshals and were not allowed to talk to family members. Scrushy's family cried quietly in the courtroom. Siegelman's wife, Lori, left immediately.

Asked by reporters about her husband's sentence and being immediately taken into custody, she said, "I expected it." She got into her car without further comment....

...Siegelman, 61, and Scrushy, 54, were convicted last year of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud. The government accused Siegelman of naming Scrushy to a hospital regulatory board in exchange for $500,000 in donations to Siegelman's 1999 campaign for a state lottery for education. The defense contended there was no quid-pro-quo or personal benefit.

Siegelman also was convicted of obstruction of justice for trying to hide money given by a lobbyist for a motorcycle. The defense contends it was a legitimate transaction and not as depicted by prosecutors....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287275,00.html

Since I know someone will ask, he's a democrat.

A wrist-slap for two men who have done evil... Scrushy caused the collapse of the corparation he headed because his insatiable greed drove him to illegally tamper with the balance sheet and every stockholder in the company lost their investment, while he has artfully hidden tens of millions in his wife and children's names... He robbed those people, and after this silly, pathetic prison sentence, he will come home to live like a king for the rest of his life...

Siegleman was a public servant who not only committed a felony, he betrayed the trust of the people of Alabama... After his little stay in "de big house", he will also come home to his little nestegg, AND will be eligible to run for public office again...

Yes, Laz, another example of how the rich and powerful get lighter sentences and maybe in a half-way house at that! Anyone else would get much worse.

And when they get out - no doubt early releases loom in their future - They will both live like kings on the money they robbed from other people, some who lost vast amounts of their retirement investments...

They should be stripped of all the wealth they stole and it should be appropriated among the victims of their evil machinations...

Both are going immediately into appeals - As if these pathetic wrist slaps were cruel punishments for their actions...

Get this - Seigleman is going into "emergency appeal" because his incarceration will cause great suffering for his wife and children...

The Prosecutors asked to 30 years for Siegleman and 20-something for Scrushy... If the Appeals court reduces their sentances even more, I can see them being released on parole in a year - maybe less...

This is a travesty!:flame:

Absolutely...the sins of the father SHOULD be visited upon his whole family. Harsh? You bet it's harsh...maybe the NEXT scumbag horse's ass will think twice about trying to bankrupt those who put their trust in him/her.

Think about it THIS way...those people who got ripped off? Do you think they are the only ones suffering or do you think THEIR families are suffering right along with them?

Their assets should be confiscated and divied up amongst those victimized (and I really hate to use that word, but in this case, it TRULY applies) by the crooked horse's south end. If that leaves them destitute, so be it.

Agreed. You may laugh at me for this but that's Klingon justice. Your dishonor will stain the next several generations of your family. I'm all for it.
