AP - Sat Jun 30, 4:48 PM ET NEW YORK - It's a funeral fit for a superhero.
I can't believe they would do that.

I quit reading Marvel long ago when they got so preachy. That happened before we got out of the Sixties.

I believe in real superheroes. Most of them are fat, balding, middle aged and over, and tough as nails. Screw Marvel Comics!

My son loves Captain America. When he was really small he called him "Captain Guy America" (not sure why) we have all the superheros from the Spiderman and friends series. He was one of his favorites and we had a hard time finding him. My brother finally got him in another state. I don't want to tell my son they are killing him. It's just sick, I mean he's Captain AMERICA.

:cryrub: The good guys are supposed to win. In my son's world that is the way it is. I hope he can live in that world a while longer. They grow past it too soon as it is.
Its just a comic book.
Sad to see Marvel has joined the liberal America-hating community and has begun to show it through their works.
Captain Cuba and the Mexican kid is sure to come soon.

Several years back, MAH-velous unveiled a "gay" gunslinger (http://archives.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/12/09/rawhide.kid.gay/).
As our story opens, the Rawhide Kid, after a last check in the mirror to be sure that his natty outfit is properly adjusted, French-kisses his soulmate, Badlands Brucie, and heads for the door with a flippant, "Keep it warm for me, honey!"
He walks slowly across the neatly-landscaped front yard, admiring the large beds of pansies that Brucie tends so diligently, seeing in his mind's eye the rippling muscles of Brucie's buff nude body glistening in the warm prairie sun as he tends the flowers. "Oh, Mary, STOP it, Kid! You won't be worth piss today!" he thinks aloud, and heads for the barn, where his trusty steed, Longtool, is already anticipating the delicate way the Kid strokes his....... mane.
The Kid knew that the day was going to be a challenge. The word was spreading that the Lavender Gang was heading for the town of Pink Rod Ridge, and they always meant trouble, waving their big guns around, taunting the good citizens with off-color jokes and salacious suggestions, and performing naughty acts with farm animals.
Moments later, the Kid was on his way toward town, singing his favorite riding ditty. "Homo, homo on the range, where the queers and the antelopes play." He was proud of himself for that lyric, even so. In the distance, Pink Rod Ridge stood out against the cloudless sky. He took a long, deep breath, checked his gun, and then his pistols, and said with his manliest voice, "Okay, you bitch queens, the Kid's coming to kick your tight butts again."

It was just a publicity stunt. The whole Civil War saga made me like him a little more than I used to (which was not at all) and it only strengthened my hatred for Iron Man.

Anyone who has followed the storyline leading up to Cap's death knows that this was not an "America hating" moment.
When they kill 'em off, they can bring 'em back later.
Yep, and there is more: the Captain America from Marvel's "Ultimate" universe is still alive, as are multiple alternate-reality versions of Cap.

Thing is, Iron Man was right. In the real world, we would never tolerate people with the power to level cities running around acting as vigilantes.

"Captain America" radiates patriotism, honor and decency. In today's "comics" world, that's intolerable. Cap is obsolete. He'll stay dead.

With the exeption of "The Hulk" in the latest run of Marvel based movies, I've actually enjoyed the Marvel heroes. Went and saw the latest Fantastic 4 with my son the other day. Silver Surfer is bad ass!!!
Captain America was OK but he was never a favorite of mine...and that's from someone who didn't read comic books.

Except that the Captain America of Marvel's "Ultimate" line is still alive. :D
When fighting an alien who suggests Ultimate Cap surrender, a full-page spread features cap screaming, "Do you think this 'A' on my forehead stands for France?" Ultimate Cap also tracked down a teammate who has abused his wife and put him in the hospital.
The treatment of Captain America in the storyline leading up to his death in the main MU made the character into an icon. In one scene, the Punisher kills a couple super-villains in cold blood. Cap, enraged, beats the living hell out of the Punisher. When Cap demands Punisher fight back, Punisher says "not against you." Seriously, Doom, read the storyline. The treatment of Captain America elevated the character and made his death mean something.

It has been several decades since I've read any Marvel comic. This sounds like a good time not to break the streak.

With all due respect, Doom, you're basically admitting ignorance of the subject matter and refusing to seek out information that might prove your opinion wrong. There's no point "debating" with someone who takes that position.

And with all due respect, I was reading Marvel comics when you were crapping in your nappies. Back off, petulant child!
I have better things to do with my time than to become the World's Greatest Authority on superheroes.
I refuse to attempt to have a rational discourse with someone who cites the Marvel "Ultimate" universe as evidence that a comic book character is still alive. Oy!

He'll be replaced by Globo Cop - a mechanical, Gore-like creature who is created by the United Nations and goes around the world stomping out carbon-producers all in the name of "fairness" and saving the planet.

Update:
Beloved comic book hero Captain America is back in action, armed and ready to fight for freedom in the 21st century.
The uniform is the same -- stars and stripes in tights. The shield is the same, too. But the man is different.
Bucky Barnes, Captain America's longtime sidekick has taken his mentor's mantle. What's more, Bucky is packing heat.
Captain America carried a gun when he was a WWII soldier fighting Nazis, but for decades he has appeared only using his shield.
It's rattling the world of comics with disgruntled fans arguing that superheroes shouldn't need guns in the first place.Exclusive: Captain America Carries A Gun (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Entertainment/story?id=4233383&page=1)
Captain America was indeed a hero, but not a "superhero" in the manner of Superman, the X-Men et al. He was a plain old Murrican man, and in our day, packing heat is a good choice for Cap-2, given that Cap-1 was shot to death.

Meh, my favorite has always been Batman. Probably followed by, with no real order of preference, Superman, Wolverine, and Spiderman.
Although I was rather disappointed with the last Superman movie in which he was both an illegitimate father and a peeping tom.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) characters in comics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_characters_in_comics)
Steve Rogers, the original Cap, will be back eventually. There was no way they were going to eliminate the character, considering how central he has been to the Marvel Universe (even after his death made him a martyr) since the Civil War.
He'll be replaced by Globo Cop - a mechanical, Gore-like creature who is created by the United Nations and goes around the world stomping out carbon-producers all in the name of "fairness" and saving the planet.
Ted Turner already tried that, with Captain Planet. I don't think the character did quite as well as the hippies hoped it would.
Ra's al Ghul, one of Batman's greatest foes and the main bad guy in "Batman Begins", is (interestingly enough) an eco-terrorist.

That kind of leaves it open. Which Green Lantern? Guy Gardner? Hal Jordan? John Stewart? Kyle Rayner? Kilowog? Ch'p?

I like Kyle Rayner and Ch'p.
I haven't read the comics for a while, they're somewhere in my room. If I remember correctly, the original Green Lantern went insane and went on a killing spree, right? And then Kyle came along...
If I remember correctly, the original Green Lantern went insane and went on a killing spree, right?
Yep. He went nuts after Mongul destroyed his city, killed a bunch of Green Lanterns and tried to re-order reality. Then it was revealed/retconned that it wasn't really him, as he was possessed by a cosmic entity that is fear personified - Parallax. So he was allowed to be a hero again, with only one person - Batman - questioning whether this mass murder was really a good guy.
Batman is not only the smartest character in the DCU, he's apparently the only smart character in the DCU. Everyone else is a frickin' idiot.

Well said, S-T. Batman doesn't need superpowers to kick a bady guy's ass. That's why I respect him more.
Green Lantern is still among favorites for comic book reading though.

The Original Green Lantern did not go nuts. He is a member of the Justice Society. It was the second Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) that became Parallax, then the Spectre. I have not read comics in a long time but the Silver Age Heroes Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Flash (Barry Allen) etc are the ones that kept getting killed or going bad. The Golden Age characters from the 40's are mostly forgotten

I'm not, at least not anymore. "Back in the day" I was a fan of the Justice Society and the Justice League

D'oh! You're right. Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern, though he was never a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Scott's powers were from a different source (mystical, I think), while Jordan and all of the other Green Lanterns were basically part of an intergalactic police force.
Golden Age heroes are still around, in the Justice Society of America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_Society_of_America) book that is still being published. Post-crisis, they merged Earth-1 and Earth-2 into one universe, meaning that the Justice League and Justice Society share a timeline.
