Fed up with defendants coming to court wearing flip-flops, wife-beater t-shirts, saggy drawers and gangster couture, some Nashville judges are saying, "Enough!"
"I've seen fishnet type shirts worn by defendants who are wearing no bra, pants or shorts that hung down so low on the body that it's almost a case of indecent exposure," Nashville lawyer David Collins said. "People come to court in flip-flips, open-toed sandals, no socks - just about anything you can imagine."
But that is changing. Monday, Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Cheryl Blackburn starts a strict dress code - one borrowed from Nashville schools.

I don't think it's the flip-flops, but the circumstance behind their being worn. Going to court is not on par with going to the beach, pool, or tanning salon, :smirky:

But when you have courts that let child molesters go free then I don't see why I or anybody else should be obligated to show any court respect by dressing appropriately.

This is what I have told my children -- yes, they can wear trashy clothes, yes they can use that as an expression of their individuality, HOWEVER, when one dresses to go before authorities, it's no longer about THEIR ability to express themselves, but about respect for those they are dealing with. By taking the time to dress appropriately, you are "expressing" your respect for the other party, not about your desire for everything to be about YOU.
This is how the snowball picks up speed down the hill ... incrementalism. Promote the "I, me, mine" mentality, assert individual "rights" over respect and consideration for others, eventually, you can no longer demand others respect YOUR rights if you don't respect theirs.
Just because one "can" do something, doesn't mean they "should" do it, nor does it make it right.

Guess I'm more draconian. I don't allow my kids to wear trashy clothes. I tell them they're completely free to express their individualism all they want, just as soon as they express themselves out of my home.

Hmmm, think I wasn't clear in my post, LOL ... yes they have the ability to do so, but not the permission, LOL. I was just trying to explain why it is better to choose NOT to dress trashy, because it's not about freedom of expression but what they are expressing ... a lack of respect for themselves and others.

Generally speaking, parents today need to know one thing:
If parents raise their kids to know their rights, they will raise rebels.
If parents raise their kids to know their RESPONSIBILITIES, they will raise citizens.
Parents seem to be too busy trying to be their kids' best friend...extremely bad idea. Our kids HAVE friends...they NEED parents.

How about respecting the courts where the judge acts like a judge, and dissing the courts where the judge acts like he hates America?
