Put Away the Flags

On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed.
Is not nationalism — that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder — one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred?
These ways of thinking — cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on — have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.
National spirit can be benign in a country that is small and lacking both in military power and a hunger for expansion (Switzerland, Norway, Costa Rica and many more). But in a nation like ours — huge, possessing thousands of weapons of mass destruction — what might have been harmless pride becomes an arrogant nationalism dangerous to others and to ourselves.
Our citizenry has been brought up to see our nation as different from others, an exception in the world, uniquely moral, expanding into other lands in order to bring civilization, liberty, democracy.
That self-deception started early.

It's worse than that, Sarah. Liberals hate Americans. I can think of no other reason meddling busybody, self appointed liberal tyrants wish to control and dictate how "We The People" live our lives.

As to your published article, I wish the author would just try and imagine "The World" without America over the last 240-odd years.

Adolph Hitler would have completed his conquest of Western Europe, and probably would have held parts of the Soviet Union. So, two of the worst and murderous governments (think human body count) would have held on to East and West Europe.

Secondly, Imperial Japan would still be "the" power on the continent of Asia, and the Asian theatre. Australia would have been successfully invaded by Japanese forces. I don't fault the Aussies, but I don't think they could have held against an invasion by themselves.

Just a couple thumbnail calculations, but it appears to me the suffering and death inflicted upon the world by the Nazis, Soviets and Japanese during and since WW2 would have been far greater and worse had the USA not existed.

"The World" is experiencing a massive outbreak of industrialization and rising standards of living. Why? Because the USA saved the entire damned world during WW2. Fact.

Instead of thanking "us", we're spit upon (figuratively speaking) by foreigners we've saved, as well as our own home grown traitors, the Liberals.

The author is very selective in condemning only the US.

There is another conservative board I go to and the resident liberal there tried to tell me he doesn't hate America but he isn't proud or loyal to America.
He said he doesn't understand why anybody should be grateful for living in the US.

Stupidity. As I just posted in another forum here, the United States is the best thing to happen to humanity since Jesus Christ strode the earth. But there are perverse people who refuse to recognize progress as progress. They seem to prefer that everyone live filthy and sick all the time, than with the comforts of modernity that owe largely to the United States.

It isn't that Americans are any better than anyone else. They aren't. But we have the benefit of a system that lets people do pretty much as they wish, within the limits of the law. That's all it takes, but the idiots of the world think it terrible that you and I may do something that we actually enjoy, rather than suffering a life of drudgery.

You're pretty smart, Sarah, so I probably don't need to lecture you on this but remind this "resident Liberal" that it's our forefathers who gave him the right to speak his lunacy, gave this nation the flag it currently has and has gone through much since it was born to protect it from enemies foreign and domestic.
