GEORGE W. Bush was absolutely right to commute Scooter Libby's prison sentence. He was only wrong in not providing a full pardon for Libby.
Remember that the alleged crime is that someone leaked Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA agent when her status was covert, which is a crime under US law.
But here's how wacky this case really is.
The only person to go to jail so far is a reporter, Judith Miller, formerly of the New York Times, who neither leaked Plame's identity nor even wrote a story about it, but who declined to tell the special prosecutor who her sources were, even though she never wrote anything about the story.
The only person convicted of anything is Scooter Libby, even though no one, or certainly not the special prosecutor anyway, alleges he leaked Plame's identity.
Rather, Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury about when he learnt of Plame's identity and who from.
But answer me this - is there a single telephone conversation you had three or four years ago where you can remember the exact sequence of what you said and what you heard?
