Study: gals don't talk more than guys

Another stereotype - chatty gals and taciturn guys - bites the dust. Turns out, when you actually count the words, there isn't much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking.

A team led by Matthias R. Mehl, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, came up with the finding, which is published in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day.

The score: Women, 16,215. Men, 15,669.

They may have proven that college girls don't talk more than college guys -- but I got my doubts about even that.

These folks don't understand the stereotype at all. There's a whole lot more to 'chatty' that just number of words. It revolves more around subject, substance and context than around number of words.

In my house Id say that my wife talks about 10 times as much as I do simply becuase she can never seem to just get to the point of what she's talking about.

The old stereotype about women gossiping over the fence out back still holds. College girls aren't the ones the stereotype is about; it's about married women with kids in a stable home and neighborhood.

Also, as women age they get chattier. Men go the other direction and grow increasingly taciturn.
