I was looking around for a little free webspace to make a webpage for our new school booster club and stumbled upon Nexo.com . Has anyone ever heard of this type of thing? Anyone familiar with it? Reviews?
It looks like it would be a good option for a school booster club, but since I've heard absolutely nothing about it, I didn't know if it was worth trying (apparently it's kind of a new thing?).
Here's the scoop from the site: Nexo - Create a Free School Website (http://www.nexo.com/create_school_website/)

I never heard of it until this thread. It appears to be a group-oriented version of MySpace.
The important point from the FAQ:
What is the pricing for Nexo?
The base Nexo service is a free advertising supported service.
Premium features for Nexo include the ability to prevent advertisements from being displayed for $14.95 per month and additional storage space for $9.95 per month for 5 gigabytes.Obviously NOTHING on the Net is truly free. TANSTAAFL. Most free sites are ad-based. If you can live with ad banners on the pages (the content of which is uncontrollable), and your server space needs won't be large, the freebie version will suffice.
One advisory:
Based in Palo Alto, CA, Nexo was launched in January 2007 and is privately held. The site is about six months old, and is apparently owned by an individual or a small group. That means limited resources. Sites that last a year or longer and are at least marginally profitable will usually be stable.
Keep that in mind when deciding, but don't let it drive you away from it. Every veteran website on the Net was six months old at one time. Don't rely on it being there forever, and don't post a byte to it that isn't backed up, but if it looks good, go for it.

Doc, how would you "back-up" something like that?
I googled for reviews of Nexo and came up with one (that I could understand, as a computer illiterate that is :smirky:), and Nexo and Ning both got a good review ... Nexo being the easiest of the two to use and Ning being the best for the computer-savvy who want the ability to do deep modifications. ( PC World - First Look: Ning, Nexo Let You Make a Social Network (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130604/article.html) )
What I'm trying to do is just a website for my daughter's weightlifting booster club. The reason I was thinking this would be nice, is that we have some members who don't actually live in our area but travel to the school for the two charter programs the school offers. By usuing this kind of site, they can get their info, e-mails, chat, etc. with other team members.
I might try it just to see if it does what I think it can do (or what I'm understanding it can do).
Thanks Doc, I always appreciate your insight and put more stock in your reviews than any other.
Blessings!

P. S. If anyone else knows anything about this, I'd love to hear your opinions!

Doc, how would you "back-up" something like that?Just make sure that you have local (on your machine) copies of everything you upload to the site. It's sound practice in every case.
Do it! You have nothing to lose.
