In fact, they are, as this modified version with a connecting bar between them clearly demonstrates. To verify it, use Color Detector (http://www.cosmin.com/colordetector/). Both areas are hex color 787878.

It's all about contrast. Put something next to something that's darker than it is and it looks lighter. It's why Hillary will never run with Obama, he makes her look too pale... :D
