A flying saucer that glides 10 feet off the ground and carries two passengers has gone into commercial production.

Moller International, based in Davis, Calif., has begun to manufacture parts for its Jetsons-like personal flying pod, the M200G Volantor.

The M200G is the size of a small car and is designed to take off and land vertically.

Company founder Paul Moller, in a press release, called the craft "the ultimate off-road vehicle" as it is able to travel over any surface....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,291889,00.html

That's one of those Big Boy toys that folks of means will buy just because. If I could, I would.

I note that the sound track of the video clip is music. Betcha that beast is loud.

That's so cool! It's kind of wobbly. It should be limited to open fields or open desert. Can you imagine people drinking and flying those things? They's clip people's heads left and right in a crowded area.

Isn't that Dennis Kucinich in there?

Wonder if it is as uncontrollable as a hover craft on sloping terrain ...

DoctorDoom

It's hard to tell how it's controlled. Perhaps the engnes are individually controllable for banking, turning. etc. One thing is certain: at 55 MPH, it's not going to stop quickly, and its turn radius will be rather wide.

And for now it's a rich man's toy. A car for two people isn't useful for families.

However, I could certainly use it in my off-terrain excursions. I spend a good part of my weekends in the wild and my car reflects that.

Supposedly, it's very very loud, so the neighbors would not love you.

:moo: Over 40 years ago, I witnessed a demonstration of those personal flying booths, that were inspired by Dick Tracy. The demo took place inside the Astrodome, & it was LOUD. I don't guess a muffler was ever invented that would suffice, & one can only guess how much fuel it used.

Moller has been working on this kind of stuff for years (see his Skycar). I wonder if this thing would really work. I live in the desert by Edwards AFB. I'd have all kinds of room for wide turns. It could be a lot of fun.

But the noise might disturb an endangered scorpion. Can't have THAT, now, can we?

IAC, I've decided that I'll wait until this one becomes available.

It's not a shadow. It's a reflection.

Must be the downflow moving the shadow...

Those aren't shadows. The trees are reflecting in the water. However, if you look at the trees on the hill at the upper left, you'll notice that their shadows are going to the left, so the point is still valid.

Doc, I thought you already had one of these????

There's no indication of sunlight on the disk—it's a partially cloudy day, and if it's anything like here, the sun is ALWAYS behind a cloud in the immediate area—ergo it won't cast a shadow.

Doc, I thought you already had one of these????That was a Beta release, a teaser. This one is direct from Zeta Reticuli, with all the goodies—FTL, interstellar range, cloaking, pulse lasers, and a 20-milllion-light-year warranty. It will be a year or two before it's available for purchase. The Zetas have a contract to fulfill with the CIA for mind-control ray satellites, and then the market will be open.

Okay, yeah. But does it have indoor plumbing?

DesertFox

That's extra.

DoctorDoom

Okay, yeah. But does it have indoor plumbing? It's not required. No trip within Confederation-controlled space is longer than 45,000 zilblax (1 hour, 12 minutes, 38.61 seconds). However, for those of limited bladder control, it includes a database of all planets where humanoids (grays, Nordics, etc.) can land, step out and take a whiz without suiting up (which is fortunate, since standard-issue spacesuits don't have appropriately placed zippers, and thus would defeat the purpose of the pit stop).

A few have lifeforms that consider that highly offensive, but that's why the ship is equipped with hand lasers. Fry one or two of the pests and the rest decide that a temporary spot of alien piss is preferable to instant, flaming death. Some reactions to imminent peril are universal.

 I thought the plural was zilblaces...

DoctorDoom
08-04-2007, 09:40 PM
Only in the Anglicized version.

One zilblac, 2 zilblax. That's standard grammar in the Zeta Reticulan language (informally called ZetRet), whch one must learn because the computerized manuals for the ship are in ZetRet, and "Press 1 for English" is not an option.
