The evening before the big hunt for Grizzly Bears, the two hunters were sitting around the lodge with their guide, discussing the relative merits of their chosen weapons. The guide, a wizened and wirey old coot, suggested they bring out their respective guns for him to inspect. The hunters were more than happy to comply.
The first hunter returned with his beautiful Winchester Model 70 chambered for the .458 Magnum cartridge. The guide carefully hefted the rifle, sighted along the barrel, worked the smooth action a couple of times and examined the scope carefully. As he handed it back to its owner, he said, "That's a nice rifle. If you handle it well, you may end up with a nice Grizzly."
Hunter number two, eager to impress the old guide, handed over his beautiful collector's Colt .45 New Army Revolver. The old-timer fondled it gently, testing its balance and feel in his hand before saying, "I've seen only a couple of these over the years. I do some gunsmithing, would you mind if I made a couple of minor adjustments?"
The Colt's owner pondered momentarily, then answered, "Sure. Whatever you think is best. I trust your experience."
With that, the threesome headed out to the barn and into the guide's small workshop. The guide carefully mounted the gun into a special vice and gathered a couple of tools. With swift precision and care, he used a hammer and chisel to completely remove the blade front site, the rear site, and most of the weapon's exposed hammer. As he was dipping the gun into a bucket of heavy oil, the gun owner was completely livid as he yelled, "What the hell are you doing!??!"
The old guide handed the pistol back to its owner as he calmly explained, "This way it won't hurt nearly as much when the bear shoves it up your a**."
