I work in the engineering department of a mid-sized manufacturing plant, about 200 employees. Five years ago, the warehouse manager needed a forklift driver, and hired a young lady I'll call "Tina".

So Tina drives to work in an old beater, wears the company uniform, and spends her days loading and unloading trucks, and moving stock around. After a couple years, the maintenance manager needs a buyer for his department - Tina gets the promotion. After another year, he needs someone to reorganize the supply room and manage his inventory - Tina gets that promotion too. Another year goes by, and the plant purchasing agent retires, leaving an empty cubicle in the office. Guess who gets that promotion? Yep, Tina.

So to recap: five years ago, Tina drives a forklift in the back. Now, she drives to work in a new pick-em-up truck, wears business casual, hobnobs with management, and gets trained in corporate accounting procedures. How did she manage all this? Well, not by adopting any sort of victim status based on her rough background. No, she keeps her eye on the ball, works hard, works smart, and grabs every learning opportunity she can. She hates making mistakes, which means that when she makes one, she only makes it once. Believe me, the people in the window seats notice this kind of stuff.

Heck, if I were 20 years younger and single, I'd probably have a crush on her, but oh well.

So to Tina, and all the Tinas of the world: :claps:

It's good to see the "American work ethic" isn"t completely dead.
