BEIJING — Authorities said that 17 pounds of weapons-grade uranium disappeared and that a verdict in the trial of four men accused of trying to sell the radioactive material will be delayed until it is found, state media reported Friday.

If anything particularly useful could be done with 17 pounds of it, it would be more worrisome. Depending on the isotope of uranium, the minimum critical mass for a sphere (the shape requiring the least mass) is either 15 kg (U-233) or 50 kg (U-235). 17 pounds is 7.7 kg. It won't go bang.
