Was it nerves, pressure or just a plain ol' case of "the lights are on, but no one's home"?
Many today are questioning the state of American education (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=57327#) after Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina, suffered an apparent and oh-so unfortunate "extreme blonde moment" during Friday night's NBC broadcast of the Miss Teen USA Pageant in Pasadena, Calif.
-- Snip --
The South Carolina beauty gave this strange, grammarless response:
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children.

She was probably asked such a stupid, impossible-to-answer question because she was known to be a southern conservative. What could she have said? Should she have told it like it is and said that because of Democrats, the public school system in America sucks and keeps everyone ignorant? She may as well have. She didn't stand a chance of winning. Only minorities win beauty pageants.
Congratulations to Miss Cruz for answering a soft and silly question about celebrities and winning the whole enchilada.

Beauty pageants are not recruiting events for Mensa, fer sher. Typically, it's the one with the IQ equal to the bra size that "wins".

But I have otherwise seen intelligent people go stupid at the podium, and did it once myself when I was 16.
I'm sure she's not a rocket scientist, but I also think she just blanked, panicked, and got diarrhea of the mouth.

This is not a meltdown. This is a stupid person.
She did not lose her composure. She wasn't nervous. This wasn't her first pageant.
She just plowed right through the question, butchering the English language in the process.
What's worse is that she knew what the question was going to be before it was asked.
Yep, Prez is right. This is just a stupid person. It sounds mean for me to say something like that, but we can't keep giving people like this excuses just because they're attractive.

She drew a blank. I'll bet she feels horrable about it. NBC keeps showing the clip making fun of her pain. Jay Leno did a segment on it. Every one thinks its so funny. She is a beautiful girl, who had the guts to get up in front of the world and do her best. She tripped. So what, I have done that many times. I hope all the pressure from this doesn't stop her from going back out there.

What's worse is that she knew what the question was going to be before it was asked.Apparently not true.
Upton said from her parents’ home in Lexington on Monday that she was aware of the frenzy created by her answer, but she misunderstood the question.
“I didn’t do anything wrong. I wasn’t expecting (the question). I lost my train of thought.”
Other than the flubbed answer, Upton was upbeat about her pageant experience, saying her friends and family are giving her their support.
Upton’s former principal, Creig Tyler, remembers her as a well-rounded student.
“She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well,” Tyler said.http://www.thestate.com/news/story/157328.html

I think she would have been much better off just saying "I don't know." The contestants may not know precisely what question they'll be asked, but they should have some clue because they have to complete questionnaires and or write essays. That's how they do it in California.
Then there's that thing called "rehearsal" that they have before the show begins.
If I don't know the answer to a question, I say "I don't know, but I will find out." I don't B.S. people and go off stammering like a village idiot. LOL

The fact is, she's a doll anyway you cut it, and they shouldn't ask such imbeccilic questions of one whom God made to simply be Christmas Tree to light up the room...
If I had been asked that question, I would have responded with, "Is that the best you could come up with? That's it - That's my question? Pffft! Im outta here... This is pathetic...":thumb:

How it was handled is an indictment of the MSM and our pop culture society more than anything else...
Actually I heard her explanation of what happened on Fox and she had a great deal of poise...
"Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question."
She gets my vote just because the media is pickin on her - and God knows how much I loathe and detest the media...

Baloney to her excuse. She's an airhead who, all the while she was spouting that drivel, stood there with her hands on her hips and her head high as if she were giving a valedictorian address--a beneficiary of the "attagirl" mentality of the great American praise parade. She still thinks she's "special" and that she did a "good job." Gimmeabreak.

Yeah she really made an ass of herself for sure. It was painful to watch.
All she needed to say was the truth. "The American public education system is a travesty. The fact that a fifth of Americans can't even geographically locate their own nation is a prime illustration of that fact. Though I'd prefer to learn more about the poll itself, as I'm wiling to wager that 99% of that fifth attended school in places like Compton, and students were not allowed vouchers which would have granted them the opportunity to attend more prestigious and result producing educational insitutions."
Best version yet.

What many of you are missing is that if the young lady sounded that idiotic with everything she said, she wouldn't have gotten as far in the pageant process as she did. Beauty pageants don't look for Einstein-types, but they do seek poise and virtue along with pulchritude. She obviously presented enough to get as far as she did.
Of those of you who have spoken in front of large groups more than a few times, how many of you have NEVER tripped up and come out with utter nonsense?
I have spoken publicly hundreds of times, and I have shown my @$$ more than a few times. When it happens, you feel foolish. Then you realize that it is human nature to have an occasional brain cramp, shake it off and move on.
Earlier this summer, I watched the Chief Pilot of an airline (not my own) melt down on the podium in front of many dignitaries. The man was very bright, but he lost his train of thought and went completely blank -- after uttering some nonsense, he finally left the podium, apologizing. It was painful to watch, but fortunately for him, his audience wasn't nearly as tough as some of you are.
I'm willing to bet that many of you who glory in this young woman's fumble, haven't been on that spot very often yourselves. And you haven't known the mortification of having a sea of faces look at you when your mind goes blank. Here's a hint: feeling the pressure to say something doesn't help you remember what you planned to say. What comes next is usually something you don't want to be remembered for.

I agree with Thomas , though ... been there done that ... have everything scripted , you know the topic , you know all the answers .. but a big brain fart happens and all is lost ... real hard to "save it" after it's "gone" , too ...
She'll have the "coulda , shoulda , woulda " on her brain for a long time ...

Who has not had any brain farts and said something completely off the wall with the audience looking at you with that "run that by me again" look? I've spoken in front of audiences my fair share. The only difference between me and others is that I talk to the audience as if I'm in a small group, and even ham it up a little. It's no biggie for me to stumble. The contestant needs to stop thinking about her babble and enjoy the attention. She's human, and not a farking machine that talks. Learn to laugh at yourselves, people. It hardens the softest candy ass.

I didn't like the fact that she would not own up to not knowing what to say and tried to bull$hit everyone. I think that makes you look even worse.
I would have preferred for her to not say anything and walk off the stage or just ask, "I'm sorry, could you please repeat the question?" If I don't know the answer or if I didn't understand something, I always ask. Always.
She claimed that she couldn't hear the entire question. She didn't say she had brainfreeze.

At least Lohan's DUI is newsworthy because it shows the callous indifference to responsibility and consequences. It lets the general populace know how screwed up most Hollywood types really are. This is just a freaking waste of time and is an example of the media trying to drag someone through the mud for practice. This event is hardly worth reporting.
