Our pet Rosie, a 3 year old Chihuahua was poisoned from Chinese made Bestro's Jerky Chicken Strips #77849 00006 1 We have this contaminated bag. We have three Chihuahuas and one of them died one month ago. She started with vomiting and dehydration (she was drinking lots of water) and then we were told she may either have an obstruction or have been poisioned. Since our dogs are inside dogs and we are with them at all times outside we thought it was an obstruction. Finally the doctor at Elwood Animal Clinic in Glendora, California said he was almost positive it was some kind of poisoning. They were going to scope her but before that could happen she died July 21, at VCA in Fountain Valley, California.
We gave our dogs Waggin train and Bestro's Jerky Chicken Strips. Our Sweet Rosie (our chihuahua that passed) loved them and and she would eat all the treats we put down for the other dogs too. Up until today we never had any idea what happened but now with Wal Mart pulling this quietly from their selves. (I brought my treats at Wal Mart, Glendora, California) I truly believe that is why she died. Rosie wants all dog owners to be aware of this and a Total Recall of this chinese junk pet food treats so other puppies don't slowly suffer is she did. We are totally heartbroken and will never forget Our Sweet Gypsy Rose!
Since Wal Mart had this problem before, why didn't they pull all that Chinese junk off the first time? Our Rosie will still be alive! Is Wal Mart concerned about people and their Pets or Money? You figured it out.

The reason Wal-Mart "quietly" pulled the treats is that at the time there was no objective, scientific evidence that they were contaminated. They responded to complaints from customers.

Furthermore, the above post is found verbatim on many other sites. We view that as spamming.

BTW, I've been a dog lover for 60 years. I know the pain of losing a furbaby, having seen a good many pass on. If this proves to be a valid complaint, it will be posted here. But until official reports are available, it remains just anecdotal evidence.

I can see someone posting their pain everywhere another pet owner might see it and not feed their pet chinese poison.

The point is that I can't find any official information on the topic, nor even a news report from a reputable agency. The only "hits" I get are posts like the above or others like it. Therefore the poisoning, if it happened, is just unsubstantiated word of mouth.

Error on the side of caution is usually wise, but having a scientific study as a basis is more compelling. And the DBM would be all over it if one existed.

The matter itself is causing my spidey sense to tingle.

Finally the doctor at Elwood Animal Clinic in Glendora, California said he was almost positive it was some kind of poisoning. They were going to scope her but before that could happen she died July 21, at VCA in Fountain Valley, California. They went to the Elwood Animal Clinic in Glendora, where a vet said they wanted to "scope" the dog. However, the dog died in the VCA All-Care Animal Referral Center in Fountain Valley, 30 miles from Glendora and from San Dimas (per Google Earth). Perhaps they didn't want the dog "scoped" because it might reveal something that they didn't want known.

This raises red flags.

Company (WalMart) spokeswoman Deisha Galberth said 17 sets of tests done on the products found melamine, a contaminant that's a byproduct of several pesticides.

"There were very small amounts of melamine found," Galberth told The Associated Press. "The amounts were so small the laboratory recommended more testing."

Galberth had said late Monday that Wal-Mart pulled the products off store shelves based on the customer feedback but wanted to complete the testing before announcing anything publicly.

[snip]

The Food and Drug Administration did not list the two Wal-Mart products on its recall Web site Tuesday. As recently as 2005, the FDA blocked some pet treat imports from Pingyang Pet Product Co. because of contamination with salmonella.Wal-Mart: Melamine Traces in Dog Treats (http://www.mywire.com/pubs/AP/2007/08/21/4285048)

Since WM has not made any public releases, one must assume that no conclusive results have been obtained thusfar.

(I brought my treats at Wal Mart, Glendora, California) I truly believe that is why she died.I see no solid evidence in the post that the cause of death was in fact poisoned jerky. What the poster might "truly believe" does not constitute a valid rationale for action. And there is a great deal more of opinion and emotionalism than of objective fact in the post.

Since Wal Mart had this problem before, why didn't they pull all that Chinese junk off the first time? The previous "problem" was part of a nation-wide, well-publicized recall of many brands and varieties of dog foods made with contaminated wheat gluten from China. This issue is with one product from one store chain, and has received NO FDA verification or MSM coverage.

Coverup? Not likely. WalMart is not in the business of killing its customers' pets. And given the antipathy toward WalMart in some sectors of our culture, I consider such spurious, unverified complaints with a lot of skepticism. The Web is a fountainhead of fringe activism.

Since this was posted verbatim at multiple sites, I surmise that it's another one of those posts originated from a site that creates multiple accounts on multiple forums using just a single login there. We had this happen in another thread just recently.

Are they showing as posted at the same time on all sites?

The identical post appeared in the comments section after the article in the link in post #5. It's almost certain that the posters are the drive-by type. They are unlikely to follow up on any responses.

Here: (http://wkrg.com/news/article/dog_treats_pulled_by_wal_mart/4596/) Posted by GeneandGerri on 08/26/07. This one is an abbreviated version, and the site requires registration. This is something a posting bot couldn't do, although it doesn't mean that one is not in use.

And after using different search terms, I did find some MSM sites that reported the item. None of them indicate anything more than has already been posted, and there is no indication that the matter is about to become nationally reported.

Maybe hold it here for now until more definitive info is obtained from WalMart or the FDA.

There has still been no official recall of the Chicken Jerky Strips. After initial testing, Wal-Mart said that 17 of their tests done on the dog treats showed there were small amounts of melamine found. Since the amounts were small, they are doing further testing.

The FDA and the Indiana State Chemist’s Office both tested the Chicken Jerky Strips separately and said they found no traces of melamine in the products.http://www.itchmo.com/wal-mart-refund-only-no-dog-vet-expenses-for-bestros-2563
